In the years before the internet became the first place everyone began their research, school and academic librarians spent countless hours teaching students from elementary school through graduate school how to read newspaper articles and magazines critically, looking for bias or political leaning. It's not enough to teach students to read for bias anymore. Even many college students have difficulty determining whether what they're looking at on the screen is a personal website, a newspaper article published by a reputable news source, an opinion piece in an academic journal, or a research study. Now, along with helping students understand the differences between information sources and examining them for bias, we must help students figure out if the information sources they've found online are even real.

Classic childhood books capture the joy and freedom of play and imagination. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats is one of those. This award-winning book tells the story of Peter and the adventures he has on a snowy day. Readers young and old can imagine the red snow-suited figure of a young boy playing in the wintry city. Many will also remember that Peter is an African-American child, and recognize that childhood delights are not determined by race, location, or gender. Everyone has fun in the snow.

Teachers face many challenges when incorporating meaningful career planning lessons into classroom learning, but the most daunting is time. However, with the right resources, and a creative approach, teachers can incorporate meaningful career planning activities that complement their classroom curriculum and empower students as they enter life after high school.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Ask any child that question, and you are bound to get a myriad of responses that range from firefighter to teacher to astronaut. And why not? Childhood is a time of wonder, imagination, and discovery, making this an excellent time to begin supporting career awareness through self-awareness. 

In June 2019, the Ohio Board of Education adopted the Social and Emotional Learning Standards which were developed by Ohio teachers, school counselors, and educational personnel. The Ohio Department of Education encourages the integration of these standards into regular classroom activities. They will not be assessed, and schools are able to choose the best approaches for teaching and monitoring for mastery. INFOhio partnered with Ohio Department of Education through the advisory and development process of the Social and Emotional Learning Standards. We believe that our resources and digital content can support the growth of Ohio students not only academically, but also mentally and emotionally. This blog series will highlight the resources available from INFOhio which can be used to support the Ohio Social and Emotional Learning Standards for Ohio schools.
