Learning Objectives


Use the following objectives to check your learning as you proceed through the class:

  • Understand the importance of using digital text and other media to support the inquiry process. 
  • Find The World Almanac for Kids on the INFOhio website: www.infohio.org.
  • Teach students how to locate information within The World Almanac for Kids.
  • Use the navigational tools to search and browse for the best content for students and instruction. 
  • Locate instructional supports within the resource. 
  • Consider methods for sharing The World Almanac for Kids with parents and colleagues. 
  • Create a lesson plan to integrate The World Almanac for Kids into classroom instruction.
  • Reflect on your learning by sharing information with others. 

 

In this class, you will work through several lessons to learn how to access, navigate, and integrate The World Almanac for Kids into classroom learning. Below is a description of each lesson and an estimate of the amount of time it may take to complete each one.

Getting Started
  • Pretest: Take a quiz to find out what you know or need to know about The World Almanac for Kids. 5 minutes
  • Welcome to The World Almanac for Kids Class: Review the class objectives and the class overview. 5 minutes
  • Using Open Space Groups: Join The World Almanac for Kids and Elementary group in Open Space. In this group, discuss and reflect on the integration of this resource into the classroom with like-minded educators. 5 minutes
How to Use The World Almanac for Kids
  • Getting to Know The World Almanac for Kids: Read facts about the resource, practice the steps needed to access the resource on www.infohio.org, and watch short video tutorials to understand some of the features of the resource. Think about what you learned by answering questions. 15 minutes
  • Using The World Almanac for Kids: Searching & Browsing: Use search, advanced search, and browse to locate resources for student use. 15 minutes
  • Using The World Almanac for Kids Teacher Resources: Locate instructional supports within the resource. 10 minutes
  • What Have You Learned So Far? Take a short quiz to check what you know. 5 minutes
  • Applying What You Have Learned: Complete an activity to practice using The World Almanac for Kids. 10 minutes

Integrating The World Almanac for Kids into Classroom Instruction
  • Teaching Students to Locate Information with The World Almanac for Kids: Support the inquiry process in the classroom and teach students how to locate information with The World Almanac for Kids. 10 minutes
  • Sharing The World Almanac for Kids with Parents and Colleagues: Consider methods for sharing The World Almanac for Kids with parents and guardians. Explore resources to share The World Almanac for Kids with colleagues. 5 minutes
  • Creating Lessons Using The World Almanac for Kids: Review lesson plans in the Teacher Resources within The World Almanac for Kids database. Create your lesson plan using a lesson plan template and resources from The World Almanac for Kids. 25 minutes
Checking Your Learning  
  • Self-Assessments: Answer the questions to reflect on what you learned. 10 minutes
