Using the World Almanac for Kids: Searching & Browsing

Navigating the Homepage

The World Almanac for Kids homepage is organized to make it easy for middle-grade students to search and browse content. At the top are categories for browsing. In the middle are Featured Topics, in the right side panels are a Did You Know? section that changes daily, and below it, additional resources to explore.

Searching & Advanced Searching in The World Almanac for Kids 

A search box is at the top of The World Almanac for Kids homepage. As users type in search terms, a drop-down box auto-populates titles of related articles. In the example below, the user searched for Ancient Greece. Note the drop-down list of related articles.

If the user chooses an article from the drop-down list, a new window appears showing that article. If the user instead clicks the search symbol after typing the term, a new Search Results window opens. This window contains links to the related articles and also allows the user to filter results by Types or Subjects.

Users can also click Advanced Search below the search bar to narrow results even further. A new window appears offering further options. In the example below, the user clicked Videos in the Filter by Asset Type and Math in the Filter by Topic.

After making the selections and clicking the blue Search button in the upper right, a list of math videos populates in a new window.

Searching by Standards

Also on the Advanced Search page is a green Search by Standards button. Educators who want content on a specific standard can search for articles that correlate. In the example below, the educator limited the standards to Ohio Learning Standards for Social Studies in grade 6.

Select the state, subject area, and grade level and click View Standards. This will generate a list of content in The World Almanac for Kids database that correlates with Ohio Learning Standards for Social Studies in grade 6. In the example below, Countries of the World, Ancient Civilizations, and World History are hyperlinked. Click the desired standard to access a list of the articles within The World Almanac for Kids that align with that standard and topic.

Browsing in The World Almanac for Kids

Browsing for content in The World Almanac for Kids is easy to do. The top of the homepage shows several categories to browse: Topics, Videos, Games, and More.

Browsing by Topic provides a list of topics divided by subject.

When the user chooses a topic from the list above, a new page will load that divides the topic even further. Also included are Fun Facts, Videos, Games & Puzzles, and Key People. The Games & Puzzles section features fun, engaging ways for students to test what they have learned with quizzes and interactives.

The example below is an interactive, drag-and-drop worksheet on the water cycle.

When browsing by Videos, a featured video at the top changes, while the rest of the videos are sorted by subject.

Users can also search by Games. There is a changing featured game at the top of the page as well as games sorted by subjects.

In addition, there is a More category that allows users to browse by Science Projects, Maps, Flags, Fun Facts, and Homework Help.
