Helping Parents Use Digital Text for Best Results

Learning Objectives
  • Understand best practices for digital reading.
  • Use materials and tips to share with parents to encourage media use for learning as well as entertainment.

Communicating with Parents

One of the Best Practices for Digital Reading is "Teachers/caregivers and parents should communicate frequently about the use of digital text." Sharing quality text from INFOhio and other digital platforms with parents and encouraging its use at home is one way to develop learners who identify technology as a way to learn as well as a source of entertainment.

For readers in preschool through grade 3, you can share reading tips and online reading resources using flyers and extended learning activities developed by INFOhio. Below are resources you can share with parents.

Middle School and High School

  • Cook or bake together using a recipe online. Ask the student to read the directions aloud.
  • Visit the library together. Talk about the types of resources you are checking out and how you plan to watch, read, or listen to them.
  • Do an online crossword or other word puzzle together.
  • Have a designated family reading time each evening. Allow the student to choose the type of reading material—digital or print.
  • Be a role model for using media for both learning and entertainment.
  • Share articles or blogs with the student on social media. Talk about what they read at dinner.
  • Turn on the TV closed captioning.
