Chapter Recap
  • The term "cloned classroom" was coined by Jennie Magiera in 2013. A cloned classroom is when teachers provide in-class instruction to students via video or screencasting lessons. This allows kids to work at their own pace.
  • Shows steps to take when planning a cloned classroom lesson.
  • When creating videos for tiny techies keep these three things in mind:
    • Keep it short and sweet.
    • Make it fun.
    • Don't try to be perfect.
  • Examples of cloned classrooms include:
    • Reviewing a specific skill content.
    • Giving directions for a worksheet or activity.
    • Teaching a differentiated or small-group lesson.

INFOhio has purchased and licensed supplemental materials to support your curriculum. Search for them quickly and easily in Educator Tools, a repository for teachers. Educator Tools is made specifically for teachers to find the instructional materials they need to support their students. Use the filters on the left to narrow a search to find the best materials for students.

Pause and Do

For this activity, browse and use Educator Tools to find supplemental materials to support something you are teaching.

  1. Think about an upcoming teaching topic. What supplemental resources could help support the learning of this topic in the classroom?
  2. Go to Educator Tools.
  3. Browse the materials and filter by specifications such as grade level, content area, by item type.
  4. Also, try searching by keyword.
  5. What is coming up in the search results? Are there videos, eBooks, or activities you can use to support student learning?

For example, a keyword search for the water cycle identifies 14 instructional materials on this topic. This list features both eBooks and videos.

Reflecting on Your Learning

Answer the following question in the Professional Learning Book Study: Building Blocks for Tiny Techies Open Space group Discussions. Find the Chapter 6 reflection question in the Discussions tab. Reply to the thread and review other participants' responses.

  1. Share the topic, content area, and grade level that you used when searching instructional materials in Educator Tools. What did you find that will support student learning in your classroom?
  2. On page 59 the author lists many ideas for use in the cloned classroom. Do any of these resonate with you? What are some areas that you believe video lessons could be beneficial for your students?
  3. On page 65, the author shares a potential roadblock in lacking time to create videos. She suggests connecting with another classroom teacher on the same grade level "to divide and conquer." Is there another grade-level teacher who may want to try some cloned-classroom lessons in your building?
