Widget, Button, or Link?

What is the difference between these website features and which is the right one for you? Read the descriptions below before you complete the next two lessons.

Widget - A widget is a mini-app on a website that interacts with users. In this case, it is a Fetch search box "embedded" on your website. Using a Fetch widget makes it easy for your students, their parents, and your colleagues to search your school library catalog from a website or learning management system.  Adding a widget will allow your students to get immediate results without having to stop on a landing page.

Button or Link - A Fetch button is a hyperlinked image on a website. It is similar to a link which should be understood as a hotlink or hyperlink that uses linked text and not an image. That means that one click will allow students, their parents, and your colleagues to search your school library catalog. See the Hudson Middle School library page for an example of an ISearch button. 

With this lesson, learn how to add a Fetch button to your school website, your school library website, or your learning management system. The next lesson will provide the steps needed if you wish to create a widget. 

Create Your Fetch URL

To link to Fetch, or to create a Fetch button, you'll need to know your school library's unique Fetch URL. If there are multiple libraries in your district, you probably have multiple Fetch URLs. 

Your Fetch URL(s) will look something like these examples:

• Austintown Elementary School: https://fetch.infohio.org/access/aust/afes
• Union Elementary School: https://fetch.infohio.org/m4/us/usms

All URLs begin:

• https://fetch.infohio.org/

Following this, URLs include the code for the ITC, the district, and the individual library.

1. To find your unique URL, go to the INFOhio website and use the Find Your Library link to find your district name.
2. Use the drop-down to expand the list of schools. 
3. Click the Fetch logo for your school or district.
   • Is the Fetch logo missing? Contact your INFOhio Provider to request setup.
4. Note the URL in your browser's search bar. This is the URL you will need to create a button or link. 

Create a Fetch Button

To create your Fetch button:

1. Gather the URL(s) for your school's instance(s) of Fetch.
2. Download the Fetch logo from INFOhio's website.
3. Add the image, hotlinked to your school library's instance of Fetch, to your school website, your library website, or your learning management system.
