Information literacy for primary-grade students depends on the developmental and social-emotional needs of learners.
Information is created by humans. Primary students should be guided to develop habits and dispositions that will help them be responsible creators and consumers. There are three dispositions that are vital for this.
The first disposition it to connect information to emotions. Encourage students to get in the habit of asking "How does this make me feel?" when they encounter new information or media.
Most of the media younger students come in contact with is not what is typically used in information literacy lessons. Instead, it is found in picture books, T-shirts, in videos, in games, and other common items.
Simple strategies like questioning and Likert Scales will help learners identify emotions when they encounter media.
