The Shift from Identifying to Investigating

The Shift from Identifying to Investigating (pages 35-39), Chapter 3 Recap
  • Opening numerous tabs in a browser to fact check and seek additional information is called lateral reading. This is the next step in the evolution of online information evaluation.
  • The use of mobile devices requires an even more complex process—moving from app to app and conducting a browser search to find patterns. This may be referred to as "teleportation." This type of investigation is much more practical and authentic than those following mnemonic devices.

INFOhio maintains Open Space as a repository for quality instructional materials available for  free on the internet. Check out these lessons and activities that support lateral searches and teleportation.

Michelle Baldwin developed these "question types" that should be asked when considering online information.

Compare it to one of the mnemonic device checklists from the previous lesson. How do these questions extend learning and evaluation?
