Chapter 18, Put a Spark in Writing: Write, Print, and Publish

purple recap
Chapter Recap
  • Writing is essential in the primary grades because it helps develop literacy and organizational skills. These help students develop their authentic voices.
  • Digital tools are a good option for publishing writing because they give students a variety of ways to share information.
  • Students should begin writing using pencil and paper, then recreate that writing digitally.

Informational Writing

To have students show their understanding of a topic they just learned about, have them write their own informational text. Share informational text from BookFlix, World Book eBooks, and Capstone Interactive eBooks with students, then have them create their own text using Google Slides. The template shared by Eric Curts in Lesson 5 would work for this activity.

Here are some great simple informational text titles to get started:

  • A Tadpole Grows Up - Text and photographs provide an introduction to tadpoles and frogs, including physical characteristics, reproduction and metamorphosis.
  • Caterpillar to Butterfly - This text explains the changes a monarch butterfly undergoes during its life cycle, and how it fits into its ecosystem.
  • Ana Anaconda  - Text and photographs feature facts about anacondas.
Creative Writing

The author shares the importance of having students write with a pencil and paper first, as they need to develop writing skills before publishing their work. To provide support and to get students' creative juices flowing, use these downloadable and printable Creative Writing Worksheets

An easy way to get students thinking about writing is to have them read different versions of fairy tales or fractured fairy tales. To begin, do this Fractured Fairy Tales interactive from ReadWrite Think together to come up with a different ending for a well-known fairy tale. Then, share more fairy tales from INFOhio, and have students choose one that they can retell. Use this list of eBooks and videos on the topic of fairy tales.
