Enrich your Teaching with Treasures from EDSITEment!

Social studies,history, art, literature and language combine on the EDSITEment website to deliver what National Endowment for the Humanties calls “a treasure trove for teachers, students, and parents searching for high-quality material” that will enrich student learning at all levels. The NEH project provides outreach to schools with a host of curriculum resources designed to foster exploration, support analysis and encourage excellence and creativity in the classroom. Join EDSITEment Program Specialists Shelley NiTuama and Joseph Phelan as they lead this treasure hunt for free K-12 primary sources, lesson plans, and timely feature collections, with a focus on middle school ELA and history. Ohio materials available on the site will also be presented.

  • Shelley NiTuama
    Program Specialist

    Shelley NiTuama

    Shelley NiTuama currently serves as a Program Specialist in the EDSITEment Project, at the National Endowment for the Humanities. She holds a BA in Literature and Dance from Bennington College, and an MA in Religious Studies from the University of Chicago Divinity School. She has taught English and Religious Studies in public and private high schools in Ohio and Maryland and at John Carroll University and McDaniel College. Making a mid-life career move into librarianship, Shelley earned her MLIS from Kent State University. For over a decade she administered programs and taught in a wide variety of library settings—public, academic and school libraries in the state of Maryland where she resides. Shelley brings all her humanities scholarship and professional experiences to bear in her work developing supplementary curriculum resources for educators and students nationwide.

    Program Analyst

    Joseph Phelan

    Joseph Phelan has worked at the National Endowment for the Humanities for over a decade and a half in various roles including almost ten years in the EDSITEment program, NEH’s digital portal for K-12 teachers and students. At EDSITEment he is responsible for the development of history and social studies resources. He has a Ph.D. in political thought from the University of Toronto, and is an associate adjunct professor of history and government at the University of Maryland University College. He has published extensively. He is the founding editor of Artcyclopedia.com, the fine art search engine.
