Learning.com Grant Not Renewed for 2017-2018
The Learning.com subscription, paid for by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), will not be renewed for the upcoming 2017-18 school year.
Learning.com offers a curriculum to train students about cyber safety, while addressing Federal CIPA requirements (Children’s Internet Protection Act). It has been funded for Ohio school districts (about 250 participated) through a grant from ODE for the last 3 years, and was administered by INFOhio, through the Management Council, as a service to ODE. Previously, curriculum subscription had been funded for several years through eTech Ohio.
Optimized by the Management Council, INFOhio was fully prepared to administer the program again this year; however, ODE is unable to renew the subscription for the 2017-18 school year due to budgetary constraints and project priorities. The annual cost to renew the software subscription had been paid by ODE and did not come out of INFOhio’s budget. Ed Weisenbach, Statewide Technology Coordinator at ODE, issued this statement: “It is with regret that I inform you that, due to budgetary constraints and project priorities, ODE will not be issuing the grant for the Learning.com Online Safety Curriculum for FY18.”
Thank you to the people who assisted with the promotion, training, and implementation of this curriculum. Lorrie Germann, State E-Rate Coordinator, will be sharing in the coming weeks other resources that might be used to assist with meeting the CIPA requirement of providing Internet safety training. If you have questions, please contact Lorrie Germann, consultant for the Ohio Department of Education.
