Dumb terminals are not useable in this new software
environment. A personal computer will be required for all staff workstations that need to
run the Unicorn Workflows client software.
Currently the Workflows client is PC based. What does this
mean for Macintosh users? In the absence of a Mac based Workflows client, it means Mac
users would need to use a PC emulation program like Virtual PC. Sirsi has a number of
customers doing this successfully now. In addition, Sirsi recently made
available a new java client for Macintosh computers. When released
to our libraries,
this will eliminate the PC emulation program requirement for Mac users to run Workflows.
INFOhio is currently field testing
the
new Mac and PC java
clients at 9 INFOhio school districts. The pilot will run from February
13th, 2006 through April 7, 2006. INFOhio will develop a complete
implementation plan for statewide rollout of the new clients based on the
results of the pilot, but we definitely anticipate it being available for
the start of the 2006-07 school year!
Many new software features
will be available in the new PC and Mac java clients. The minimum workstation
requirement for running WorkFlows Java follow:
These workstations should be compatible into the
foreseeable future and will allow the library staff to take advantage of advanced features
and functionality that will be added to the staff client software. For example:
- Ability to perform print preview and laser printing of spine
labels
- Control over font and color displays within the client
- Cataloging features that will give application help on tags,
subfields, and indicators
- Ability to select a column heading and sort the data in that
column
- Finer control over the cosmetic output of receipts

Libraries having older machines running Windows 95/95/NT
will be supported initially (thru 2004) but they will not be able to take advantage of the
advanced features available in the software. Workstations meeting the following criteria
fall into this category.
- Intel/PC
- 20MB hard disk space available for application
- Network card
- Single processor 200 Mhz Pentium II minimum (700 Mhz
processor recommended)
- Memory varies depending on operating system of the machine:
- Windows 95/98
- Windows NT/2000/XP (Not meeting above minimum requirements
for these machines)

INFOhio has successfully tested the following Macintosh operating systems.
- iMAC OS 9.1 (Running Virtual PC4)
- iMAX OS 9.2.2 (running Virtual PC4)
- Power MAC G4 (running Virtual PC4)

Barcode scanners that are currently connected to dumb
terminals are typically not compatible with PC workstations and will likely need to be
replaced. Libraries should check compatibility with the scanner vendor, their DASite, or
consult the list of scanners that have been tested with the new software.
The following scanners have been tested with the Sirsi
Unicorn Product at this time:
- EZ One Shot (ID Tech - California)
- Follett IT3800
- Follett Software Co. - Item #522022
- Metrologic Laser Scanner (951/47) (9520)
- Opticon CCD Scanner (OP-994-00118, LGP-5125 - Tested with connection to a MAC)
- Opticon CCD Scanner
- Opticon OPT-6125 (Tested with connection to an eMac)

- Percon PT2000
- ScanPal2 (INFOhio to develop routine to put file into correct format for loading into SIRSI)
- ScanTEam 3400 CCD
- Symbol LS4071
- Symbol P370 Wireless Scanner
- Voyager MS 9520
- Welch-Allyn 3800 (#IT3800)

The following list of scanners represents other models we
are currently aware of that are being used by some schools throughout the State but they
have not been tested with Unicorn. If your brand and model of scanner is listed below, or
is not found on either list (above or below), we ask that you notify your
regional ITC the brand and model
number of your scanner. It will be important to schedule a test of your scanner prior to
transition to ensure there are no incompatibilities with the new software.
- American Microsystem portable data terminal with Opticon
attached (TCCSA)
- Cipher Lab CCD (4-pin DIN MAC) (TRECA )
- Logic Controls CCD Scanner (MVECA)
- MS-210-M (NOECA)
