Back to Transition Cleanup page

Why is database cleanup important?

As we prepare to make the transition to Sirsi’s Unicorn product, cleaning up your current records is important. Poor quality records will not be improved by simply transferring them to a new automation system and in fact will cause additional problems. As you complete these cleanup tasks, you may be pleasantly surprised at how it improves your current catalog in MultiLIS.

In addition, the Sirsi software searches all tags and will enable us to search special fields such as reading programs. For these searches to function properly the data must be in the correct tag and be formatted properly. Because MultiLIS did not index all tags, users have entered data into other locations for search purposes.  These need to be identified and the proper MARC tags need to be created with the correct data while maintaining the current MultiLIS functionality. DASites will be able to do most of the data correction with custom procedures, but your participation in identifying the data to be copied to correct MARC tags will be essential.

Though INFOhio will be approaching the cleanup in phases, it is important that we begin the cleanup process now. INFOhio understands that you are quite busy and completing these cleanup tasks may be especially time consuming for some libraries. Starting now will give you time to complete the tasks over a longer period of time.
