MultiLIS: Preventing Enhanced Records from Overlay (Record Protector)
Posted January 9, 2000

Question:  How do I keep a record I have enhanced from being replaced by a vendor record if another copy is purchased by someone in the district?

Answer:  MultiLIS users can do this by creating a "record protector." This is done by creating a record which contains only a title and an 020 tag. The title is "Recordprotector." Each time a record needs to be protected, the ISBN of the record is added to "Recordprotector." Since vendor loads are generally loaded to match and overlay on ISBN, a matching ISBN will not know which record should be overlaid—the actual record or the one titled "Recordprotector." Therefore, the record will not load and it will be reported in the sortie as rejected due to repeated ISBN. When a search on the ISBN to discover the reason for the rejection results in one of the matching titles being "Recordprotector," you will know why the record was rejected and can manually add the item to the record you have enhanced and are protecting from being replaced.
