024 Tags: 13-Digit ISBNs
Posted December 1, 2004

A new international standard is expanding the current 10-digit ISBN to a 13-digit ISBN. The official date for this new standard is January 1, 2007, but some publishers expect to begin printing both the current 10-digit and the new 13-digit ISBNs in 2004. The Library of Congress planned to begin recording 13-digit ISBNs in LC records on October 1, 2004.

Temporarily, Sirsi and MultiLIS users should put 13-digit ISBNs into subfield $a of the 024 tag with a first indicator of 3, until Sirsi software adjusts to this new standard. OCLC will be following these procedures, until its new system platform is completed. Watch for notification when the use of 024 for 13-digit ISBNs is no longer appropriate.

Enter each 13-digit ISBN in a separate 024 field. DO NOT repeat subfield $a in a single 024.
Examples:
024 3$a0379005514123
024 3$a0379005506123
