Cataloging Reference Archive 020 Tags: 13-Digit ISBN During the transition period from 10-digit ISBNs to 13-digit ISBNs, both OCLC and SirsiDynix used the 024 tag to accommodate 13-digit ISBNs. That practice has now ceased. As 2007 approaches, nearly all library automation programs will be capable of handling both the old 10-digit ISBNs as well as the new 13-digit ISBNs. SirsiDynix users can find a detailed explanation in the INFOhio/SirsiDynix K-12 Tip Sheet 11.4T, 13-Digit ISBN [MS Word 2 pgs; username/password required]Explanation of the new ISBN: The 10-digit ISBN included a country code, publisher code, particular title/edition number and check digit, which would sometimes be the letter X. The new 13-digit ISBN includes the prefix 978 (for now), country code, publisher code, particular title/edition number and check digit, which is derived by a different calculation and will never be the letter X. The 13-digit ISBN check digit will usually not equal the 10-digit ISBN check digit. Starting January 1, 2007, only 13-digit ISBNs will be issued, starting with the prefix 978. The 979 prefix will be used eventually. Example: For detailed information on the recording of multiple ISBNs, see INFOhio Cataloging Reference Archive 020 - Guidelines for Multiple ISBNs. |
