Quick Help Guide for INFOhio CatExpress Service

All CatExpress records are loaded into the INFOhio Union Catalog nightly. Therefore, to make the most effective use of your CatExpress dollars, always check the Union Catalog before using CatExpress.  CatExpress allows you to (1) copy a MARC record as is into your system, OR to (2) add items and make certain modifications that will be part of the MARC record copied into your system.

Step-by-Step CatExpress Instructions

Find your OCLC Code first., then point your Web browser to : http://connexion.oclc.org/ to access CatExpress

  • Add this site to your Favorites folder or list of Bookmarks, so you will not have to key in the URL again.
  • Enter Authorization number
  • Enter Password
  • Click Login
    • You may be prompted with the option to save your password so that it will not be necessary to enter it each time you wish to login. By saving your password, you will be able to click Login after entering the authorization number.

  • Click on CatExpress button on the menu at your left
  • Under Search on the menu at your left:
    • Click on BASIC, to make a quick/simple title, ISBN or Keyword search.
    • Click on ADVANCED, to make a search using more variables or a combination of variables.
Searching tips
  • If searching for an ISBN, do NOT type hyphens. (Example: 1565920015)
  • If searching for an ISSN, DO type the hyphen. (Example: 0043-5651)
  • If searching an LC number, enter zeros after the second digit to make a total of 8 digits. (Example: To search for 67-7014, type 67007014.)
  • If entering a title search, you MUST click on the empty circle (radio dial) and select title as the search type.
  • If a standard number or title search does not retrieve a title or does not retrieve the correct title, try an advanced search.
Tips on Matching Records
  • Standard Numbers - because standard numbers (ISBN, ISSN, LCCN) are used as unique identifiers, the presence of the same standard number on the item you are cataloging and the record you have found strongly indicates a match but does NOT guarantee a match.
  • Edition - edition statements in titles should match. Different editions are different records. If editions do NOT match, the record is NOT a match.
  • Physical description (Format) - the dimensions and other physical characteristics should match. If physical description is different, the record is NOT a match. For example, a musical score and a sound recording are different records, even if they have the same title.
  • Publishers - publishers should match. If the title is the same and the publishers are different, the record is NOT a match.
  • Notes - notes often highlight distinctions among similar items. Check notes for descriptions of distinctive characteristics of an item to help determine a match.
  • Library of Congress cataloging - many libraries prefer records created by the Library of Congress. If LC appears after the title of the item on the Search Results screen, the record was created by the Library of Congress or another library participating in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC).

More detailed instructions for matching records are available in the INFOhio document Guidelines for Matching MARC Records

  • When the correct title has been found, click the Edit Record button.
  • Enter your 4 digit OCLC Holding Library Code. The first three characters may already be displayed; add the fourth. Without this code your record cannot be identified as belonging to you, and you will not receive it. As long as you do not exit, you will not have to enter the four character code again. It will be displayed automatically.
  • To add items. If you choose to add items online, follow the "Instructions to add items" below.  And then return to step 8.
  • You may now press the Save to Catalog button.

    You now two options:

    • To search for another record: Return to step 5
    • To Exit CatExpress, click the Exit button in the upper right corner of the CatExpress screen.
