OCLC CatExpress FAQs - Functionality

Question:  I have read the documentation, Users Guide, and the FAQs; I still do not have an answer to my question.

  • Answer:  You can leave your question in the suggestion box OR you can send a message to Juanita Markham, INFOhio Technical Support.

Question:  Is there anyway I can practice on OCLC CatExpress without messing up anything?

Question:  Do I have to worry about initial articles and stopwords when I am searching?

  • Answer:  Not really. OCLC CatExpress treats title searches as a form of keyword searches, which makes use of stopwords. The most common articles in English are included in the OCLC CatExpress stopword list and are automatically dropped before the search is done. There should be no difference if you put them in your search or leave them out. Here is a list of the OCLC CatExpress stopwords:

&           be            he            of            was

at          have         not           to

Question:  When I return to the search screen, my last search is there, but it has letters in front of it. What are these, and do I need to learn what they are?

  • Answer: When OCLC CatExpress sends the search, it is actually translating the type of search you chose into an index label. So, if you have chosen the standard number search, the system takes the number and sends it with the prefix "sn:". You could enter the index label as part of the search without using the pull-down menus to choose the type. The table below gives the type of search and the associated index label:

Question:  What fields are indexed by which index label?

Question:  What fields can I edit in OCLC CatExpress? Revised February 18, 2003

  • Answer: Here is a list of the fields you can enter in OCLC CatExpress. You can't change or delete fields already present in the record.

MARC Tag         Definition
020 $c                 Price
049                      Holding library code (MANDATORY, will need to change
to appropriate 4 character holding library code)
090/092/099      Call number (LC, Dewey, Local)
500                      General note
520                      Summary
521                      Target Audience
590                      Non-printing/Local note
852                      Holding information (note: Only specific subfields are included)

Question:  What happens if I put in a Contents note (505) when the bibliographic record already has one?

  • Answer: You will get two notes in your record. You get everything that was already on the record, with the addition of the information you entered.

Question:  What if I really need to add different subject headings, or change the main entry, or delete notes I don't need?

  • Answer: You'll have to do those types of editing in your local system.
