Ohio Libraries Share: MORE - Statewide Resource Sharing
Talking Points for Administrators

The talking points below may assist discussions with school administrators making a decision to participate in the OLS: MORE program.

"Think about it as a consumer." (Former Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric) Fingerhut said. "You do not buy all your things at one type of store – your choices would be restricted. The same thing is true in (higher) education."

Farkas, Karen. "Ohio regents help students to transfer more easily." Cleveland Plain Dealer, November 11, 2010, page B7.

SUPPLEMENTS YOUR COLLECTION – OLS: MORE is NOT meant to replace the purchase of new items, but rather to be an extension of your library in order to provide additional resources. Think of OLS: MORE as the vast warehouse of supplemental materials from which you can order without charge. (The delivery cost to U.S. Cargo is the only potential cost.)

IMMEDIATE ACCESS – Your own school libraries provide immediate access for students and teachers. OLS: MORE is used for special projects, further research or for items needed only once.

REDUCE MAILING COSTS – Participating in the OLS: MORE network allows your district to use U.S. Cargo to send materials to any other school district or public library that participates in OLS: MORE, anywhere in the state, at no additional cost. Coaches can send DVDs, band and choir directors can send competition packets to other schools. Administrators can send packets of material to schools within their conference or across the state.

DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING – OLS: MORE provides a wealth of materials to better meet student needs. Let’s say that an inclusion class needs materials on World War II but has students reading at a 4th grade level. The librarian can secure items from OLS: MORE to supplement items from the district’s K-12 libraries. Materials can also be gathered to supplement Honors, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate projects.

RETAIN NEEDED MATERIALS – Your schools do not need to lend materials that would not normally circulate to students. Special collections – e.g., holiday books or those that will be soon be needed for your own teachers – do not need to be loaned. District policies apply for lost, damaged and late materials. Loss rate is very low (one item every three years or so), and no monies are transferred between libraries.

How OLS: MORE Can Improve Student Learning
Classroom teachers and librarians use OLS: MORE most often to secure extra books for book discussions or to temporarily replace books needed for literature assignments. For example, the English department has only 25 copies of The Old Man and the Sea (since copies have been lost), while the average class size for English Ten is 33 students. OLS: MORE can secure the additional eight copies needed for the unit. The loan period in most cases will be one month, allowing adequate time for students to read the material.

Most common uses of MORE with students:

Promote Literacy. Gather books for book clubs or discussion groups.

Literature studies. Provide extra copies of novels for a unit.

Collection Development. Expand collection by borrowing materials.

Special projects and rarely used materials. Enhance learning.

Foreign language publications for English Language Learners or students in Advanced classes in a foreign language. Enrich learning.

Most common uses of MORE for administrators:

Staff development. Borrow books, DVDs to support annual goals.

Graduate school research needs. For teachers and administrators

Administrative needs that are curriculum-related

School board needs that relate to school law

Multiple copies of books for professional learning community discussions
