Internet2 and Ohio schools: a world of resources
Background information from INFOhio

Proceed to Internet2's home page.Internet2® is the foremost U.S. advanced networking consortium. Internet2 promotes the missions of its members by providing both leading-edge network capabilities and unique partnership opportunities that together facilitate the development, deployment and use of revolutionary Internet technologies. Internet2 empowers institutions and innovators from primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, libraries, and museums to collaborate in using new technologies, applications and content quickly and effectively. The Internet2 community participates in online social network sites and conferences that enhance communication and collaboration for members.

Internet2 and INFOhio

Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, Ohio school districts that use the Ohio Education Computer Network as their primary Internet provider have unlimited Internet2 Network access without bandwidth charges and will join members of the Internet2 community. Ohio's program is funded by the Ohio Department of Education and is administered by the Technology Solutions Group - Management Council of the Ohio Education Computer Network (mc•tsg) in collaboration with the Ohio Academic Research Network (OARnet). Costs for Internet2-capable technology within the school districts or additional charges for participating in Internet2 activities will be the responsibility of the districts.

Click to jump to the INFOhio home page.INFOhio, the Ohio K-12 virtual school library and information network, will be providing training on Internet2 to Ohio schools. INFOhio will assist Ohio’s K-12 administrators, technology support staff, teachers and students in tapping into the power of Internet2. Internet2 resources will support Ohio Academic Content Standards, 21st century learning skills and instruction. A steering committee coordinates INFOhio's efforts.

For educators who want to learn more about Internet2 in our state and around the world, subscribe to INFOhio's Internet2 E-List (listserv). An archive of past discussions is available.

Internet2 in Ohio's K-12 classrooms

Internet2 will bring a world of resources into the classroom.

In buildings with adequate connectivity and equipment, students and teachers will be able to participate in a variety of online, real-time, authentic learning experiences.

Using Internet2, additional resources to support Ohio Academic Content Standards, 21st century learning skills, and instruction will be available during the school day, such as INFOhio's Core Collection resources.

Building a network of learners using Internet2 that includes local, regional, state, national and global partners will assist teachers and students in collaborative learning opportunities.

Participation in collaborative projects such as video conferencing and distance learning education will be possible, but districts/schools will be responsible for any additional charges or fees.

Web 2.0 online applications and sites, including podcasting, remote instrumentation and social networking, will be much more accessible.

Internet2 will enhance technology integration into schools, such as Ohio Area Media Centers' Digital Video Collection.
