INFOhio's spring 2008 series of 60- to 75-minute, interactive video conference professional development workshops is for teachers, librarians, curriculum coordinators, guidance counselors and technology coordinators. Librarians are encouraged to organize a group of participants with computers at their sites, as there will be hands-on activities in most of these presentations. CEU certificates will be provided. This connection is for ATM sites.

To schedule a video conference, e-mail Melissa Higgs-Horwell, Distance Learning Coordinator at SCOCA, with your contact information, video conference contact person, site name, DID number and troubleshooting phone number. Or, use the Site Registration Form for the appropriate session. Deadline to register: Three days prior to each session

Update on INFOhio Digital Video Collection: Easy Search, Newest Videos and More

February 21, 2008, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Join us to learn about the brand new Easy Search feature for INFOhio’s Digital Video Collection of 282 videos, explore new features of the collection and get an update on the newest videos. The Easy Search feature was added in January 2008, and an RSS feature was added on February 8. These new features, along with demos and discussions of some recent additions to the collection, will be part of this session.

It's easier than ever to access Ohio Area Instructional Media Centers' (OAIMC) Digital Video Collection for all subjects and grade levels, now that home access is provided with the same username and password required for INFOhio’s Core Collection of Electronic Resources. This entire collection is available without charge to Ohio’s K-12 community.

The Tool for Real-Time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (TRAILS) can be used to measure students' information seeking abilities. Participants will learn how to create and manage an online account on the TRAILS site and how the assessments and their results can be used to help plan and evaluate collaborative lessons aligned with content standards. Hear others discuss their uses of the tests as well.

INFOhio's SchoolRooms™ provides a single, student-friendly interface to high-quality content from school library catalogs, online databases, 3 million “Best of Web” teacher-selected Web pages as well as statewide digital resources. Content is presented in virtual rooms that help students discover information, provide educators with access to quality materials and enable parents to find appropriate resources for improving their children’s education. This introduction to SchoolRooms includes student, parent and teacher resources, as well as password information for you to share with your faculty, parent groups and students.

This session will focus on running SirsiDynix/INFOhio reports to obtain information such as circulation statistics, titles used in the library, average publication year of your collections, value of your collections and more.

Hear from INFOhio experts with SirsiDynix software, discuss unique situations and needs, and come away with some tools to promote your library program.

In this interactive session for teachers and librarians on SIRS Discoverer WebFind: Educator Tools, participants will learn how to access quick, convenient curriculum integration tools for the 21st century K-9 classroom. We will explore SIRS Discoverer's popular Activities collection, its information literacy workbooks and in-class worksheets, standards correlations tool, reading levels, and various editorial features. We will also review ProQuest's curriculum integration guides, which include models designed to engage student inquiry.

Participants are encouraged to have computer access, if possible.

SIRS Discoverer: Science and Math

You are invited to an after school interactive workshop on SIRS Discoverer, an information and learning resource for elementary and middle school teachers and students. Come join us for an informative hands-on workshop which focuses on integrating SIRS Discoverer in the math and science curriculum, with special focus on Ohio standards. SIRS Discoverer is an award-winning resource for students that makes learning fun and intuitive. It helps students in grades 1-8 develop their writing, language, research and computer skills. It can also be used with high school students for differentiating instruction. SIRS Discoverer provides schools with compelling, multidisciplinary learning resources for extending and reinforcing student achievement at all levels. This workshop will explore SIRS Discoverer's science and math content, as well as methods for differentiating instruction using SIRS Discoverer resources.

Content, Curriculum and Promotional Ideas

As librarians and teachers, we are challenged with teaching 21st century information literacy skills and also with providing the quality resources that our students need. This session will discuss the value of EBSCO databases for classroom teachers in major subject areas including an understanding of subject-specific content, how to locate important content sources, pushing information to our teachers and ideas for promoting database value and usage with teachers.

A Smooth Transition to College for Students Using INFOhio's EBSCO Databases

This interactive videoconference takes a look at the similarities in the INFOhio K-12 and academic EBSCO databases that make transitions from high school to college easy. The session will discuss search tips, feature utilization, common threads with interfaces and how new EBSCOhost features will tie into some of the common Web functionality that our students have come to expect from their favorite Web sites. Advanced search strategies and tips for college research will also be stressed.

Resources and Assignments From INFOhio and More

Moving from an industrial to a knowledge economy requires that we shift teaching strategies to better prepare ALL students to compete in Math and the Sciences. Ohio’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Initiative is charged with bringing about that change. Teacher-Librarian Cherie Pandora will provide you with access to FREE databases, including INFOhio’s Core Collection of Electronic Resources. In addition, Cheri will review other Web sites and resources to boost student achievement. Learn what standards will be met using these resources. Learn about how collaborative projects and research assignments planned between teachers and librarians can assist to meet the STEM goals.

Helping students succeed and helping Science and Math teachers build lessons and select databases to better prepare students for the global marketplace has been the passion of the presenter many years.
