Using Graphical Images From INFOhio Resources
May 22, 2006

Students and teachers are looking for quality graphics to enhance lessons and projects using word processing and presentation software. INFOhio's Core Collection of Electronic Resources provides a wealth of graphics and photos which can easily be copied into projects. The databases are arranged by subject area.

All Subjects

EBSCO ImagesEBSCOhost The EBSCO Image Collection contains over 180,000 photographs and images including current events, sports, maps, entertainment, the sciences and historical interests. The images are gathered from several leading providers such as UPI, Getty Images, Canadian Press, The Motion Picture and Television Photo Archive, MapQuest and public domain sources. From the main EBSCOhost screen, click on EBSCO Images. The Image search screen provides several choices for narrowing your search. Click on the blue Help button below the search term field for additional tips.

Proceed to Britannica Online School Edition.Britannica Online School Edition – All three Britannica encyclopedias display the same Multimedia or graphics, regardless of which one you select. Choose one of the three, such as Compton’s, and enter your search term. If graphics are available for your topic, they will be displayed in the frame to the right labeled Multimedia. Click on More Multimedia for all the images retrieved by your search. These results may also contain Video/Animations.

Proceed to SIRS Discoverer.SIRS Discoverer Many of the thousands of magazine and newspaper articles in SIRS Discoverer contain pictures. Enter your search term into the search box. From the results, click the top tab labeled Pictures to view the list of graphics retrieved. You can also select Pictures under Database Features to go to a searchable list of all illustrations. In addition, SIRS Discoverer also has Photo Essays on several subjects. These include several photos on that topic accompanied by brief text that helps tell a story.

Proceed to NewsBank Newspapers.NewsBank Newspapers While the main section of NewsBank Newspapers does not have illustrations, the Special Reports sections have a wealth of photos. From the left side of the main page, select one of the current Special Reports or click on View All Special Reports to see past entries. Near the top of each report, you will see a line marked View. Select Images to see the graphics provided on that topic. While there are several hundred excellent photographs, unfortunately they are not searchable.

Proceed to Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection.Oxford Reference Online With the addition of the Visual English Dictionary, Oxford Reference Online now has over 6,000 maps and illustrations. Click on the Advanced Search button, clear all the boxes and check only the one marked Maps & Illustrations.

Art

Proceed to The ART Collection, an online image collection of thousands of museum items from earliest times to the present. The Art Collection includes over 54,000 images of sculpture, ceramics, architecture, jewelry and other types of art. These are works which are found in over 20 museums in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. There are many search methods to help you locate graphics of these works of art.

History

Proceed to Annals of American History.Annals of American History – While this resource's focus is on primary source text documents, the publishers have included several hundred multimedia entries, and many are photos that relate to U.S. History and culture. A quick way to the pictures is to use the timeline. After selecting a time period, select Multimedia from the dropdown menu labeled Display. Then click Go to see images, audio and video. Many of the results from a keyword search display pictures, too.

People

Proceed to American National Biography.American National Biography – If you are looking for a picture or painting of a famous American, ANB has about 2,500 illustrations in the 18,000 articles. In the Search Results List, those articles with pictures are marked with a camera icon. You can also go to Advanced Search and select the box marked Illustrations to limit your results to only articles with graphics.

Science

To find them quickly, click on Go to Advanced Search in the blue box on the AccessScience home page. Enter your search term, select Figure Captions, and click Search. All of the entries in the Search Results have at least one figure, some with a direct link to the graphic. In addition, AccessScience also has an Image Gallery near the bottom of the green box which contains several excellent Exhibits or collections of graphics on one particular topic. These have been arranged into PowerPoint slide shows complete with presentation notes! At present there eleven exhibits on such things as Tsunami, Mars Explorations and Pioneers of Flight.

Spanish-speaking country graphics

Proceed to Enciclopedia Universal en Espaņol.Enciclopedia Universal en Espaņol – If you can speak Spanish, this resource has hundreds of illustrations; especially maps, flags and pictures of Spanish-speaking countries. They are included with the articles, not in a separate section. First, search for a topic. Look for the Illustraciones button on search results lists.

Adding Images to Your Project

The ART Collection has an excellent tutorial on adding graphics to documents or PowerPoint presentations. From the INFOhio screen for The Art Collection, click on the blue Help button and select How to AMICO: A Guide for Users of the AMICO Library. The name of the database has changed, however the document is still an excellent reference tool.

Citing Graphics and Media

Just as we teach students to cite all print and online resources used, it is critical to model and teach citation of all graphic resources. Many of INFOhio's Core Collection of Electronic Resources will provide specific or general methods of citing their resources. If you are unsure, ask your librarian for help in creating a proper citation.

SIRS Discoverer has an excellent Help screen for citing resources. Near the bottom of the main screen, click on How to Cite for an excellent overview of citing all types of results, including graphics & media.
