Mathematics Resources From INFOhio

INFOhio's Core Collection of Electronic Resources has several resources which will help your students achieve in Mathematics.

Proceed to Britannica Online School Edition.Britannica Online School Edition – Britannica contains a wealth of math resources: Exercises, Interactive Lessons, Study Guides and brand new Manipulatives. From INFOhio’s Britannica access page, choose Compton's (the green button), select Learning Materials near the top of the page and then click on Mathematics. You will notice that there are several sub-headings and each is divided into resources for Grades K-5 and 6-12.

Exercises are game-type tutorials which will help students practice math facts.

Interactive Lessons are memory and recognition activities.

Study Guides contain a complete overview of a subject with several lessons, activities and resources.

Manipulatives are a new collection of interactive applets which allow students to explore and play with a concept. Britannica anticipates adding new manipulatives over the next several months!

Britannica Online also contains Lessons and Web Resources correlated to Ohio standards. From Compton’s main page, click on Teacher’s Resources and then select the hyperlinked text to Curriculum Standards. Choose Ohio and either select the subject and grade level or enter a keyword in the Advanced Search box to retrieve a list of standards. Items with lessons will be hyperlinked to available resources. As with math Manipulatives, Britannica is continually improving this product. (Grades K-12)

Proceed to AccessScience for thousands of articles and dictionary terms and hundreds of "Research Updates" in all areas of science and technology.AccessScience Mathematics is a branch of Science and therefore well represented in this resource. It is easily searched by keyword or topic. Topic search shows a listing of subtopics, study guides, biographies, related Web sites and more. Many of the encyclopedia articles contain formulas, diagrams and illustrations. (Grades 7-12)

Proceed to LearningExpress LibraryLearningExpress Library – This test preparation site is new to INFOhio this school year. Here you will find tutorials and practice tests for everything from Fourth Grade Math to AP Calculus. Students can set up their own accounts and use these resources from school or home to improve their ACT and SAT Math Test scores. Tests can be completed in one session, or students can quit and come back later to complete their work. LearningExpress Library is a terrific new resource for students who want to improve their skills or for teachers to use with students who need remediation and practice. (Grades 4-12)

Proceed to SIRS Discoverer.SIRS Discoverer Although SIRS Discoverer is primarily a periodical index, SIRS editors have selected several fun mathematics articles. From Browse Subject Tree, click on Science, then the subtopic Mathematics, Weights & Measures listed on the right of the screen. For fun games and activities from Scholastic Math, Cricket, Hopscotch and similar magazines, click on Activities under Database Features; then select Math Activities & Puzzles. (Grades 2-8)

Proceed to Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection.Oxford Reference Online If you need a quick definition or spelling, this is an excellent resource. In some cases, you will even find illustrations. Type a keyword into the Quick Search box. Or, under Subject Reference, select Physical Sciences & Mathematics. Here you can search individual reference resources such as The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Mathematics, Dictionary of Statistics or Dictionary of Weights, Measures and Units. (Grades 4-12)

Proceed to World Data Analyst.World Data Analyst This new resource from Britannica contains statistics for more than 200 countries on such areas as Demography, Vital Statistics, National Economy, Transportation and Communication, Education and Health and Military. Figures can be compared between countries or for one country chronologically. Statistics can be viewed as a table or a chart  even exported into a spreadsheet for further manipulation. (Grades 4-12)


Other online resources

Proceed to OH! Kids.OH! Kids is a fun site for students linked off the INFOhio Other Resources button. WebTots (kids under 6) has several links for Letters, Numbers and Shapes. WebKids (ages 7-9) and WebTweens (ages 9-11) have links to sites. These fun and educational resources are hosted by OPLIN, The Ohio Public Library Information Network. (Grades K–6)

Proceed to "Numb3rs" section of CBS Web site.Numb3rs – CBS has a new drama series this fall that stars an FBI agent whose brother, a math genius, helps solve the crimes. Texas Instruments has created a site called We All Use Math Every Day which contains activities to go along with each episode. These activities are written as lesson plans and contain student worksheets and activities. (Grades 7-12)

These include games, activities, lessons and other fun resources divided by grade-level, guidelines and benchmarks. (Grades K-12)


INFOhio's resources for parents and teachers

Proceed to INFOhio's Parent Resources section.INFOhio Homework Help Tools – This site created especially for parents is a fairly new feature for INFOhio, so you’ll want to browse all the resources located here. From the INFOhio home page, click on Parents, then Homework Help Tools. There are several math-related links listed under Calculators and Conversion Tools and Mathematics.

ohteachbuton.gif (6952 bytes)OH! Teach – Selected at this site are some of the best of Math links for teachers. Click on Curriculum Areas then Mathematics for recommended sites for both teachers and students. If you want to find the “best of the Web,” this is the place to look!

Proceed to EBSCO Professional Search.EBSCO Professional SearchFrom the EBSCOhost page, select Professional Search to access thousands of full-text publications on the subject of education. Search such publications as Mathematics Teacher, Mathematical Thinking & Learning, Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and many more. In addition to searching educational periodicals, Professional Search also allows simultaneously searching of ERIC as well as Academic Search Premier. These powerful databases give math educators access to the latest research and study in the field.


Resources for national and Ohio math standards

Proceed to NCTM's Illuminations page.IlluminationsMarco Polo hosts this Web resource created by the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics. This site contains Lessons, Standards, Tools and Web Resources. The Lessons include lesson plans which can be searched alphabetically or narrowed by grade level or Math standard. Tools are applets which students can manipulate to explore a mathematical concept. Standards and Web Resources are self-explanatory. Math teachers, if you haven’t yet explored this site, you’ll want to bookmark it!

Proceed to the Ohio Resource Center.Ohio Resource Center – This resource provides selected lesson plans and activities based on national and Ohio standards. Select ORC Features – Ohio Mathematics for links to both. Select Browse – Mathematics to search by topic or grade. The Ohio Resource Center also contains lesson plans and activities for Reading and Science. Primary funding for this initiative is from the Ohio Board of Regents.
