Health Studies Using INFOhio Resources

Studying health and the human body is now easier, more up-to-date and FUN using the INFOhio's Core Collection of Electronic Resources! There are resources for younger students as well as databases which help keep older students aware of what is happening in the areas of their own personal concerns and world-wide health.

Reminder: While online health resources contain authoritative and current information, only a certified health care professional can give offer advice about personal health issues.

Systems of the Human Body

Proceed to Britannica Online School Edition.Britannica Online has several animations which show how many systems of the human body work. From Britannica Online School Edition (the gray button) click on the Learning Materials link located under the blue title bar. In the left frame, click on Science. Under Biology/Science, click on Grades 6-12 Interactive Lessons. This section contains animations, lesson plans, quizzes and activity sheets on systems of the human body such as cardio-vascular system, brain, eye, digestive and lymphatic systems, and many others. These can be viewed independently by students or projected as a class lesson in conjunction with the activity sheets or quizzes.

Britannica Online also has hundreds of diagrams which can be used in PowerPoint presentations or alone as study guides. From the Britannica home page, type in your keyword (such as digestive system or skeletal system) for a wealth of colorful illustrations and diagrams in the section marked Multimedia.

World Health

Proceed to NewsBank Newspapers.NewsBank Newspapers has the latest information about health conditions around the world. From NewsBank’s main screen, click on the Special Report entitled World Health. In addition to the latest newspaper articles, you will find statistics, maps and near the bottom of the page, Web links to various health associations. News articles are updated daily.

Medical News

Proceed to EBSCOhost.EBSCOhost has the latest periodical articles on all areas of medical research and development, teen health concerns, and more. Younger researchers can select the grade appropriate database to get health-related articles at their reading level. Older students can get general information by selecting Secondary Search and then choosing MAS Ultra or MasterFILE Premier. For more advanced information included in professional journals, select Academic Search Premier.

EBSCOhost also contains six other health-related databases. From the main EBSCO screen, select All Database Search and select one or more of the following:

Proceed to A.D.A.M. Health Encyclopedia, in-depth information, illustrations and animations on hundreds of topics; provided by NetWellness.A.D.A.M. Health Illustrated Encyclopedia is an excellent resource for in-depth information, illustrations, and animations on over 1,500 medical topics. From INFOhio’s home page, click on the green Other Resources button to find the link to A.D.A.M. From the main page, you can alphabetically explore diseases, or click on the links on the right to find information on Injury, Nutrition, Poison, Special Topics, Surgery or Tests. The information contained is quite complete, and there are explicit graphics for most items.

Proceed to MEDLINEplus, health information from the National Library of Medicine.Medline Plus offers a wealth of information from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. A link to this resource can be found under the green Other Resources button described above. In addition to the latest health news updated daily, select from Health Topics, Drug Information, Medical Dictionary and more. On the right side of the main page, click on Interactive Tutorials for 165 animated presentations on:

Tests and Diagnostic Procedures such as CT Scan, MRI, etc.

These Interactive Tutorials can be used by students independently or may be projected and viewed as a classroom presentation.

Proceed to NetWellness.NetWellness is a service provided by Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati. In addition to over 135,000 pages of information on Health Topics (much from A.D.A.M. and Medline Plus listed above) NetWellness also provides an Ask An Expert service where individuals can ask health-related questions which will be answered by one of over 300 health professionals.

Health Videos from INFOhio

Special Agency Online Catalogs (Medianet)Ohio's Area Media Centers (AMCs)  provide all schools with a Digital Video Collection of more than 130 titles in streaming and download video format. These titles include several from the Bill Nye: Science Guy series, as well as other videos on systems of the human body and specific diseases. Once you find a title to use, click Locate This Title and you will be taken directly to the page where you can order the title from your AMC. If you don't already have a client name and password from your AMC, request one at no cost. Complete instructions are located on the Digital Video Collection page.
