INFOhio Electronic Resources Spotlight #2
Science
Resources
January 6, 2004INFOhio has several electronic resources which
support the Ohio Department of Education's Science Academic Content Standards for each Benchmark and most
Grade-Level Indicators.
 AccessScience
Targeted for students in grades 8 and above, this new INFOhio resource is based on the
print McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, 9th Edition. In
addition to 7,000+ encyclopedia articles and 110,000+ scientific definitions, AccessScience
includes 2,000+ biographies of famous scientists.
Those who have visited this resource
in the past will notice a new interface that makes AccessScience easier to use
and more intuitive. New features include the ability to e-mail links to articles and
enhanced article citation information. Quick search boxes on the main screen allow easy
access to encyclopedia articles or dictionary terms. Click on Advanced Search for additional search features or
to Browse Alphabetically. Valuable features of
the resource include Headline News articles from Science News
magazine (updated weekly and archived), an Image Gallery, and quick links
to new or recently-updated encyclopedia articles. Teachers, check the Study Guides
for an overview of a wide variety of sciencific topics.
By clicking on the INFO button on INFOhios AccessScience
authentication screen or Core Collection page, you will find
several Help Resources to assist teachers and students with using the resource. With the
publisher's new interface, INFOhio has updated two of our Help Resources: the Getting
Started Guide and the PowerPoint presentation.
 Britannica
Online School Edition With three levels of encyclopedias, BOSE contains
science information for learners of all ages. In addition to encyclopedia articles, the
results screen includes magazine articles for Grades 1-6 and Grades 7-12, recommended Web
sites, and even video clips for some topics. From Learning
Materials (found in the right frame of the main search screen), select Science.
Learning Materials contain Activities for
higher grades, Exercises for younger learners, Study Guides for teachers and Web Site Activities for everyone. Especially
notable are the animations under the Activities
for grades 6-12. Many new Activities and Study Guides have been added recently.
SIRS Discoverer This full-text
periodical index is perfect for grades 4-8, as well as older students who might need
simpler articles and activities. To access periodical articles, either perform a keyword
search or select Science in the Subject Tree.
Many of these periodical articles are actually activities which can be done individually
or with a class. Under Database Features select
Activities, then Science & Nature Projects. As in all of
INFOhios periodical indexes, new articles are added daily.
Oxford Reference Online This new
INFOhio electronic resource contains 16 separate science-related dictionaries, covering
topics from Astronomy to Zoology! Words can be entered in the Quick Search box or individual dictionaries can be
selected. Remember
these are dictionaries, so expect only short definitions.
For the latest Science news from
newspapers, magazines and journals, dont forget EBSCOhost
and NewsBank Newspapers.

OH! Kids and OH! Kids WebTweens are fun and
educational Web sites selected especially for Ohios younger students. Hosted by OPLIN, The Ohio Public Library
Information Network, these resources may change when new sites are discovered.
Science Fair Projects
No overview of Science Resources would be
complete without links to Science Fair project information. Try OH! Teach, which is located on the INFOhio
home page. Scroll down and click on Curriculum
Areas, then Science. Scroll down to Science Fairs for several links to some of the best
Web sites leading students (and helpful parents) through the scientific research process
and also giving project ideas and step-by-step instructions. Edited by Kent State
University professor Dr. Carolyn Brodie, OH! Teach is sponsored
by INFOhio and OPLIN.
