Why do I have to enter the INFOhio username and password to use SchoolRooms?
While INFOhio staff and Ohio educators have helped develop SchoolRooms, the product is the intellectual property of SirsiDynix. INFOhio is able to provide SchoolRooms free to Ohio's PreK-12 community during the 2008-2009 school year, as long as we insure that access is restricted to eligible patrons. At some point authentication may be by library account number and password; currently, the INFOhio Core Collection username and password, using only lower case, may be Go to the top of this page.required.

Who chooses the Web sites in SchoolRooms?
Most of those who selected the original Web sites in the Rooms taxonomy (upper left frame) are Ohio educators who answered a call from INFOhio to assist in this project. Use the Room Contributors link in the main menu of most pages to see a list and read brief bios.

Results in Best of Web™ are found by using keywords and concepts from the taxonomy sites to search selected World Wide Web sites. Basing Best of Web searches on the hand-picked SchoolRooms sites leads to more high-quality results that can be targeted to grade level and age-Go to the top of this page.appropriate content. How are the sites maintained?
SirsiDynix employs a team of educators - many are original contributors - to monitor each Room on a regular basis. SchoolRooms Advisory & Maintenance (SAM) Committee members check each site, making changes to improve the quality and reliability of SchoolRooms. The company uses Go to the top of this page.Web site evaluation software to search for broken links, as well.

What do I do if I find a broken link or want to suggest a new link?
Use the Help Evaluate box in the right frame of the SchoolRooms home page. INFOhio passes Go to the top of this page.such comments along to SirsiDynix and to the SAM Committee.

What can I do about blocked sites?
Blocked SchoolRooms sites usually occur because of the settings of your Web monitoring software. Contact your technology coordinator to unblock individual sites that you consider appropriate for Go to the top of this page.your students.

Is the entire INFOhio Core Collection of Electronic Resources included in SchoolRooms?
Currently, only those Core Collection resources that are included in INFOhio's INFOsearch can be Go to the top of this page.searched through the SchoolRooms portal. A list of those resources is available.

Why do I get an error message in some of the search boxes?
When using the federated searching capability in SchoolRooms, visitors are simultaneously searching across a large number of various sources. These include Best of Web, the selected district's library catalog, numerous databases and OAIMC’s Digital Video Collection. In order for the search tool to provide the results, it is taking the user entered search term and executing the search across each of these sources individually. As each source (database, catalog, etc.) responds, the results are displayed in the SchoolRooms interface. For this reason, users will see “loading” for some of the sources while other sources display results.

Further, if the data source (database, catalog, etc.) fails to respond to the search request within a defined time period (typically 15 seconds), the user will receive an error message for that source. Executing the search again may yield results from a source which previously returned an error. This occurrence of a timeout error does not represent an issue with SchoolRooms, or the source itself, but only indicates that the source did not return the data within the set time frame. As more databases migrate to a similar data structure and federated search tools evolve, users will see these errors with less frequency, if at all. If a user does notice that one source in particular is not responding with regularity, report the situation so our technical team can check the configuration Go to the top of this page.between SchoolRooms and that source.

The search results are appearing in the Room rather than in another window.
Make sure you are allowing pop-ups in your browser. The links will open in a new window as long as pop-ups are allowed.

Also, in later browsers like Internet Explorer 7, a new tab may be opened. If opened tabs or pop-ups are not closed, subsequent articles may not open a new tab or pop-up, but simply refresh an already open tab or pop-up that is currently “hidden.” Leaving a pop-up or tab open is OK; just be Go to the top of this page.aware that the information you just requested may be on one of these hidden screens.

When should I begin using the search box?
For best results, select an audience level before using the search box. The search box will structure the search keeping in mind the area the user has requested (elementary, middle school, high Go to the top of this page.school, educator, etc.).

Can I retrieve lobby content from previous months?
Not at this time. If you want to save a particular lobby area, be sure to save it to your computer or Go to the top of this page.bookmark the Web sites of interest to you. Upcoming releases will address this issue.

How do I use the Digital Video Collection?
If prompted, use the current INFOhio username and password to download or stream Digital Video Go to the top of this page.Collection materials. DVC help

How can I suggest general SchoolRooms improvements?
While most of the SchoolRooms features are determined by SirsiDynix, INFOhio Technical Support staff is responsible for some of the screen elements and arrangement. Submit your suggestions with the Comments/Suggestions link in the Help Evaluate box in the right frame. INFOhio will consider your comments for our next release or will pass along your ideas to SirsiDynix, whatever is more appropriate. Since the 2008-2009 school year will be used to conclude our evaluation of Go to the top of this page.SchoolRooms, we welcome everyone's comments.
