July 2006 Spotlight: Our Solar System
The solar system consists of the sun (a yellow dwarf star), the nine planets and their
satellites, meteoroids, comets and several thousand minor planets called asteroids.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are the nine
planets of the solar system.
The solar system itself is a rather small part of the massive Milky Way galaxy and orbits
around the center of the Milky Way once every 225 million years. The work of NASA and
other space agencies provides information about the Earth's moon, each of the nine planets
and several asteroids. Although these various bodies have been studied and categorized,
astronomers don't know precisely where the solar system begins or ends. Read more about
the solar system in such SIRS Discoverer
