African-Americans contributions to American history and culture. In 1926, historian
Dr. Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week and timed it to honor the birthdays of
abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. As the event grew in
popularity, it was renamed Black History Week. Eventually, an entire month was devoted to
the celebration. In keeping with the spirit of Black History Month, SIRS Discoverer highlights the
contributions of notable African Americans, including Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin
Luther King, Jr. and many others, in such articles as:

Facts
for Features: Valentine's Day: February 14
"One legend has it that Valentine's Day originated to commemorate the anniversary of
the death of St. Valentine, a Roman clergyman who was executed on Feb.14, about 270 A.D.,
for secretly marrying couples in defiance of the emperor. According to another, the
holiday began as a Roman fertility festival. Americans probably began exchanging handmade
valentines in the early 1700s." (U.S. CENSUS BUREAU) Learn interesting facts about
