Social Reformers and Civil Rights Activists. Performers and Writers. First Ladies and
Slaves. Philosophers and Spiritualists. War Heroes and Abolitionists. These are the women
who created the rich history of the United States and these are the women portrayed in the
American National
Biography Online.
ANB Online celebrates the history of the United States with over 18,000 portraits of the
men and women who shaped the nation. This month, we'd like to remind you that ANB Online
is a valuable tool in discussing Women's History Month. From colonist Anne Hutchinson to
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, from Sacagawea to Seminole leader Alice Brown Davis, from
capitalist Hetty Green to anarchist Emma Goldman, and from Josephine Baker to Katharine
Hepburn, ANB Online encourages students to explore American history through the lives of
remarkable and notable women.
Whatever the direction your class discussion may take, ANB Online is a resource that will
expand and enlighten your students' learning experience. Two valuable tools offer students
quick access to biographies of women.
Students can "jump start" their research with an editorially selected list of
articles relevant to women's history. With overview articles and selected biographies,
students are given a place to begin their exploration of the database. Go to the Women's History section
of Research Ideas to get started!
The Women's History Special Collection celebrates women's contributions to the
nation's heritage with articles covering a range of time periods and occupations. This
Custom Search feature allows users to refine their search to these specially identified
entries. Go to the Custom Search
page of ANB Online, select the Articles in Women's History Special Collection
check box, and add any additional parameters to your search.
And don't forget that teachers will find six detailed lesson plans in the ANB Teacher's Guide to help them
incorporate ANB Online into the classroom and get the most out of this valuable resource.
We hope you continue to find ANB Online an important addition to your library and
classroom resources. And we encourage you to forward this e-mail to all of your history
and English teachers to maximize utility of your ANB Online subscription during Women's
History Month.
