This month's update to American National Biography Online adds 31 new articles that shed light on persistent currents in the national life. When Robert Trent Jones (1906-2000) devised his world-class golf courses and Pete Rozelle (1926-1996) ushered football into the media age, they were following through on William Buckingham Curtis's (1837-1900) crusade to build a culture of athletics in America. Carroll O'Connor (1924-2001) entertained the nation in the character of the bigoted Archie Bunker, much as Joshua Norton (1909-1971) embodied his era's delusions for the people of San Francisco by proclaiming himself Emperor of the United States. Gaetano Salvemini (1873-1957) and Paul de Man (1919-1983) played out variations on the role of the émigré scholar, one a medievalist sworn to fight fascism, the other a literary theorist with a secret meaning in his past. Jack Cole (1914-1958) created the comic-book fantasy of Plastic Man; Donald J. Cram (1919-2001) made chemical discoveries that would turn fantasy into reality.
