Wilson Biography Databases

The Wilson Biography databases offer Wilson content, quality and ease of use. In addition to basic Name and Keyword searches, drop boxes make it simple to search by Profession, Birth Date, Gender, Place of Origin (every country, continent and U.S. state). The content is updated daily. Articles can be printed or e-mailed; images can be printed.

JUNIOR AUTHORS & ILLUSTRATORS, appropriate for grades 4-6, allows the user to search all nine volumes in a single database. Each of the 2,100 in-depth profiles is between 700-1,500 words in length. Photographs accompany 90% of the profiles. Links to full-text articles, book reviews excerpts and abstracts from Wilson periodical databases expand and update the profiles. Complete description

CURRENT BIOGRAPHY contains all of the 25,000+ articles written by in-house staff since 1940. These substantive articles average 2,500 words in length, with the first few paragraphs providing an overview of the subject’s life. Articles are sent to the subject of the biography for additional fact checking. The database often includes multiple articles on the same individual, providing more depth. In addition to the content from 30+ Wilson print titles, 65,000 bios are licensed from Grove, Houghton Mifflin, Harvard University Press, Greenwood, Oryx and more. Coverage spans all time periods from antiquity to the present day and is international in its scope. Over 36,000 images are provided. The ”Plus” material includes full-text magazine articles that provide added content to the bio articles. Wilson Standard Catalogs

The Wilson Standard Catalogs are created by advisory committees composed of librarians who are specialists in literature for children and young adults. The catalogs are useful for selection of core titles and for guidance in weeding. Searchable by Keyword, Subject, Title, Author and other access points. Cataloging information and Book Review Digest Plus records (excerpts from 3-12 reviews) are provided when available. Updated several times each month, as the selection committee finishes its review of the title.  Prior editions included as archived files.

READERS GUIDE FULL TEXT SELECT – a 100% full-text database covering 215 journals, from 1996 forward. Graphical content is provided with PDF page images. Professionally written abstracts of 50-150 words help the users access just the articles they need. Updated five times each week.

READERS GUIDE FULL TEXT MEGA – the complete content of Readers Guide from 1983 forward, this database includes all of the indexing and abstracts for nearly 400 titles and the full-text content for 215. Complete description

SCIENCE FULL TEXT SELECT– a 100% full-text database that includes 333 journals, providing a broad range of important science articles with consistent and up-to-date subject headings. Combines content from all Wilson science databases. Complete description

Web accessibility (ADA, Section 508 compliance): WilsonWeb is compliant with Section 508 of the ADA requirements. WilsonWeb is understood to be in conformance with the following list of 508 standards as outlined for Web-based intranet and Internet information and applications in § 1194.22:

(a)      A text equivalent for every non-text element shall be provided.
(b)      Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation shall be synchronized with the presentation.
(c)      Web pages shall be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color.
(d)      Documents shall be organized so they are readable without requiring an associated style sheet.
(e)      Redundant text links shall be provided for each active region of a server-side image map.
(f)        Client-side image maps shall be provided instead of server-side image maps except where the regions cannot be defined with an available geometric shape.
(g)      Row and column headers shall be identified for data tables.
(h)      Markup shall be used to associate data cells and header cells for data tables that have two or more logical levels of row or column headers.
(i)        Frames shall be titled with text that facilitates frame identification and navigation.
(j)        Pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz.
(k)      Provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes.
(l)        When pages utilize scripting languages to display content, or to create interface elements, the information provided by the script shall be identified with functional text that can be read by assistive technology.
(m)    When a Web page requires that an applet, plug-in or other application be present on the client system to interpret page content, the page must provide a link to a plug-in or applet that complies with §1194.21(a) through (l).
(n)      When electronic forms are designed to be completed on-line, the form shall allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues.
(o)      A method shall be provided that permits users to skip repetitive navigation links.
(p)      When a timed response is required, the user shall be alerted and given sufficient time to indicate more time is required.
