History Database Search

Facts On File is pleased to introduce History Database Search, a powerful new interface that will automatically be made available to customers who subscribe to two or more of Facts On File’s history databases. History Database Search is a customized search engine that allows students and patrons to search across multiple Facts On File history databases, thus providing broad access to an unsurpassed online collection of authoritative history reference materials. Libraries can utilize the History Database Search interface to search across the following six history databases (libraries can also subscribe to these databases individually):

  • American History Online - American History Online is a comprehensive and authoritative reference to the most important individuals, events and topics in United States history. Spanning more than 500 years of political, military, social and cultural history, this invaluable reference source is organized by content type, topic, era and activity, as well as by the National Standards for U.S. History. Thousands of fully hyperlinked entries allow users to follow a topic to related biographies, primary source documents and images. Web links direct users to a number of relevant educational sites.

  • Modern World History Online - The newly redesigned Modern World History Online, formerly called World History Online, covers world history from the mid-14002 to the present. This comprehensive online resource contains thousands of fully hyperlinked subject entries, biographies, images, maps and charts, primary source documents and timeline entries that combine to provide a detailed and comparative view of the people, places, events and ideas that have defined modern world history.

  • Ancient and Medieval History Online - Formerly called Ancient History & Culture, Ancient and Medieval History Online has been expanded to cover eight civilizations—ancient Egypt, ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Greece, ancient Rome, ancient and medieval Africa, medieval Europe, the Americas and ancient and medieval Asia. Users can research each civilization in depth or use the browse feature to conduct comparative studies of events and developments across civilizations. This expansive database offers an unprecedented amount of information about these civilizations and their places in history, with content drawn from Facts On File’s acclaimed print references.

  • African-American History Online - Culled from many of Facts On File’s critically acclaimed print titles, this unique, comprehensive reference explores all aspects of the African-American experience. Extensively hyperlinked entries, including photographs and maps, span more than 500 years of African-American history, and cover topics such as affirmative action, Africa, black nationalism, civil rights, emancipation, Harlem Renaissance, leaders, religion, slave living conditions and liberation strategies, sports, visual arts and more.

  • American Indian History Online - American Indian History Online is an authoritative reference database that provides in-depth coverage of more than 5,000 years of culture, legends and leaders. More than 500 Native American groups are covered in fully hyperlinked and easy-to-access entries, including primary source documents, biographies, maps and charts, images and timelines. The database also features searchable tribe and culture area indexes, as well as the ability to search for tribes by region. Web links direct users to a number of relevant educational sites.

  • American Women’s History Online - American Women’s History Online contains biographies, historical and topical subject entries, speeches and other documents, maps and charts, photographs and timeline entries that cover more than 500 years of American women’s history. Covered topics include civil rights activism, gender discrimination and harassment, education, family, marriage, health, medicine, performing arts, politics, sports, voting rights and more.

Curriculum Resource Center

For middle school, high school and junior college teachers and students seeking material to supplement their coursework in core subject areas—including U.S. and world history, science and geography. This electronic library of curriculum-related handouts provides access to a broad selection of visual content, including maps, science diagrams, science experiments, historical images, historical timelines and other handouts, all of which can be saved in a password-protected folder, e-mailed, or printed and used for worksheets, overheads and testing.

Curriculum Resource Center Junior Edition

For elementary teachers and students seeking material to supplement their lessons, this electronic library of curriculum-related handouts contains an expansive collection of visual content—including people and events in history, maps and flags, timelines, science diagrams, science projects, career ideas and other handouts. Each handout can be saved in a password-protected folder, e-mailed, or printed and used for worksheets, overheads and testing.

Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center

Comprehensive and up to date, this database profiles more than 2,000 of today's most exciting jobs in more than 90 industries. Fully searchable and extensively hyper-linked, Ferguson's Career Guidance Center contains in-depth job descriptions complete with job-specific resource listings, detailed industry descriptions, career resources, career preparation information (including scholarships, academic programs and non-academic programs), and Web resources. The database also includes a searchable archive of articles from Career Opportunities News, a newsletter covering the most recent trends and news in the job market. Users can access information through searches by industry skill, job level, education or salary range as well as by popular government indexes such as the Dictionary of Occupational Titles.

Science Online

Science Online conveys the visual nature of science in a clear and easy-to-comprehend manner. The curriculum-oriented database offers a comprehensive, authoritative overview of a broad range of scientific disciplines through extensive definitions, essays, diagrams, illustrations, images, biographies, experiments and activities. The content is organized by subject area and type of resource, as well as by the National Science Education Standards. Teachers, students and researches will appreciate the in-depth essays on topics ranging from environmental science and weather and climate, to new biology, the history of science, human anatomy and mathematics. Boolean search capabilities help users maximize the potential of this powerful database.

The World Atlas

The World Atlas combines more than 500 reproducible, full-color maps with superb statistical information on more than 200 nations, the 50 states, the 13 Canadian provinces and territories, regions and continents. Bloom's Literary Reference Online

Bloom's Literary Reference Online examines the lives and works of great writers throughout history. Diverse as it is authoritative, the database is also being thoroughly revised and expanded to include the writings of renowned literary critic Harold Bloom. The database not only contains information on thousands of authors and their major and minor works, but also an archive of 35,000 characters, as well as extensive glossary and subject entries featuring relevant historical events and their impact on literature. Additional features include in-text linking, advanced search capabilities, browse options and regularly updated featured content. Designed for literature students, library patrons and teachers, it is a powerful, comprehensive and easy-to-use research tool.

Health Reference Center

Health Reference Center is a comprehensive, authoritative encyclopedic database containing more than 20,000 hyper-linked entries on today's most pressing health and social issues. It defines the causes, cures, key research, medical terms, symptoms, and treatments and trends of each field of study and explores the social impact of numerous health-related subjects. Entries are written in clear, non-technical language that is easy to comprehend, and also are clearly organized by topic and type, including biographies, encyclopedia entries, glossary terms, resources and organizations, social and cultural factors, tables and statistics, and tests and procedures.
