EBSCO Information Services

NOTE: EBSCO Publishing is proud to provide, via INFOhio, numerous general reference databases to all K-12 schools in Ohio. Due to the additional demand for supplemental databases from Ohio schools, EBSCO is offering the following products to complement this INFOhio access.

All databases proposed herein are available via the EBSCOhost interface, with the exception of Literary Reference Center, which has a unique interface. The Literary Reference Center is a highly graphical interface intended for secondary school libraries. In addition, several databases are available via the Student Research Center interface.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Advanced Placement Source is designed to meet the extensive needs of high school students enrolled in various AP courses. It offers a world of knowledge for students who seek to achieve academic excellence. This database is designed to support students in multiple areas of study including mathematics; physics; chemistry; biology; computer science; human geography; psychology; economics and statistics; government and politics; environmental science; U.S., European and world history; the arts and music. Advanced Placement Source contains more than 6,000 full-text journals and over 200,000 photos, maps and flags.

new3.gif (1057 bytes) Literary Reference Center is a comprehensive database that provides users with a broad spectrum of information on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and timeframes. It has been specifically designed for public libraries, secondary schools, junior/community colleges and undergraduate research. Literary Reference Center is a full-text database that combines information from major respected reference works, books, literary journals as well as original content from EBSCO Publishing. Literary Reference Center includes more than 10,000 plot summaries, synopses and work overviews, 80,000 articles of literary criticism, more than 130,000 author biographies, full text of over 300 literary journals, 500,000 book reviews, 25,000 classic and contemporary poems, 11,000 classic and contemporary short stories, full text of 7,500 classic texts (anticipated by December 2006), 3,000 author interviews, and much more. In addition, Literary Reference Center also includes Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature, Continuum Encyclopedia of American Literature, Continuum Encyclopedia of British Literature, Continuum Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, Beacham's Research Guide to Biography and Criticism (six volumes), The Oxford Illustrated History of English Literature, The Literary Encyclopedia, The Columbia Companion to the 20th Century American Short Story, all of MagillOnLiterature Plus™, and much more. 

MagillOnLiteraturePlus, produced by Salem Press, combines all the quality content of both MagillOnLiterature and MagillOnAuthors in a fully integrated and enhanced single database. This database is composed of approximately 35,000 critical analyses of individual works of literature, 6,500 biographical records, more than 1,000 images and a glossary of 1,310 literary terms. MagillOnLiterature Plus contains editorially reviewed critical essays, brief plot summaries, extended character profiles and detailed setting discussions covering works by more than 8,500 long and short fiction writers, poets, dramatists, essayists and philosophers. The biographical essays reflect extended coverage of the 2,500 most studied authors and include up-to-date lists of each author's principal works and current secondary bibliographies. In addition, 395 comprehensive genre-driven overview essays provide details about important literary genres, time periods and national literatures.

MagillOnHistory, produced by Salem Press, combines content from their critically acclaimed history reference sets in a fully integrated single database. This database is comprised of approximately 10,000 records, more than 1,800 historical images, charts, graphs and maps, and an index of more than 13,000 names. In addition, this database includes more than 4,000 biographical essays which examine the lives of more than 3,800 historical figures. With essays on people, events and cultures ranging as far back as 25,000 b.c.e., MagillOnHistory offers extensive coverage of the ancient world; American History, including colonial and pre-colonial U.S. and Canada; cultures and civilizations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Americas and Oceania. In addition, MagillOnHistory provides intensive coverage of the twentieth century, with special focus on economics, science, human rights, the environment and the arts.

Columbia Granger's® Poetry Database, produced by Columbia University Press, contains works of poetry found in anthologies and volumes of collected works and selected works for individual poets. Currently, there are over 500,000 poem citations and more than 95,000 poems in full text (with thousands of additional poems in full text to be added with each update). Also included is bibliographic information for 1,800 anthologies. Supplemental information includes over 1,100 commentaries and some 560 biographies. Hyperlinking exists throughout the commentaries, biographies and poem full text. Users can easily jump from poems to relevant commentary or author biographies when appropriate. A glossary is also provided, giving users detailed definitions for almost 200 poetry specific terms.

History Reference Center® is the world's most comprehensive full-text history reference database designed for secondary schools, public libraries, junior/community colleges and undergraduate research. The database features full text for more than 2,000 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books from leading history publishers, such as Branden Publishing, Compass Point Books, Houghton Mifflin, Lerner Publishing Group, Mason Crest Publishers, Morgan Reynolds Inc., Oliver Press, Oxford University Press, Primedia Special Interest Publications, Rourke Publishing LLC., Salem Press, Stackpole Books, Toucan Valley Publications, and more. The database also includes full text for more than 120 leading history periodicals including America's Civil War, American Heritage, American Historical Review, American History, Archaeology, Aviation History, Beaver, British Heritage, Chinese America: History & Perspectives, Civil War Times, Foreign Affairs, German History, History, History Review, History Today (back to January 1975), History: Review of New Books, Kansas History, Journal of American History, Manitoba History, Military History, Naval History, North Carolina Historical Review, Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Wild West, World War II and more. Further, the database contains 59,000 historical documents, more than 49,600 biographies of historical figures, more than 104,720 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video.

Book Collection: Nonfiction is a rich research database for school libraries. A cross-curricular database, it provides content representing a wide spectrum of works, including popular series from top book publishers such as Allosaurus Publishers, Bess Press, Inc., Branden Publishing, Capstone Press, Compass Point Books, Fulcrum Publishing, Lerner Publishing Group, Mason Crest Publishers, Morgan Reynolds, Inc., Morning Glory Press, Oliver Press, Rourke Publishing, LLC and Stackpole Books. It contains informative abstracts and searchable full text for more than 3,600 popular nonfiction books. The database includes full-text entries on core subject areas, as well as information on careers, health, sports, adventure, technology, life skills and more.

new3.gif (1057 bytes) Biography Collection Complete™ offers a comprehensive collection of full-text biographies supporting history, science, the arts, music, literature, multicultural studies, gender studies, business, government & politics, sports, entertainment and many other areas. This database features more than 177,000 full-text biographies from many different sources.

MLA International Bibliography offers a detailed bibliography of journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language Association (MLA), the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to the 1920s and contains over 1.8 million citations from more than 4,400 journals and series, and 1,000 book publishers. The indexed materials coverage is international and includes almost 60 titles from J-STOR's language and literature collection as well as links to full text. This database includes journal abbreviations and acronyms for almost 3,500 titles, with full journal names standardized and ISSNs attached. MLA International Bibliography also contains nearly 11,000 subject names and terms. Subjects consist of literature, language and linguistics, folklore, literary theory and criticism, dramatic arts, as well as the historical aspects of printing and publishing. Listings on rhetoric and composition and the history, theory and practice of teaching language and literature are also included. In addition to the bibliography, the database includes the MLA Directory of Periodicals; the association's proprietary thesaurus used to assign descriptors to each record in the bibliography; and a proprietary, searchable directory of noted authors' names, with links to brief descriptive notes.

Auto Repair Reference Center™ - EBSCO Publishing has partnered with Point 5 Technologies to create Auto Repair Reference Center. The Auto Repair Reference Center database includes automotive repair information supplied by Point 5 Technologies, Inc., under license from Nichols Publishing, the former publisher of the Chilton® information and information from Delphi Integrated Service Solutions. Auto Repair Reference Center contains information on most major manufacturers of domestic and imported vehicles, with repair information for most vintage makes starting as far back as 1945. Database content includes approximately 26,000 vehicles covered from 1945 to present; over 150,000 factory drawings and step-by-step photographs; over 70,000 technical service bulletins and recalls issued by the original equipment vehicle manufacturer; over 100,000 enhance wiring diagrams for easy viewing and printing; specifications and maintenance schedules; Labor Time Guide & Estimator; AutoIQ; Quick Tips, a complete guide to vehicle ownership and maintenance; unlimited remote access and much more. New repair procedures and updates will also be added continuously. All of the content in Auto Repair Reference Center has been created by ASE certified technicians.

NoveList®is an online readers’ advisory service that helps librarians and readers find fiction books based on books they have read or topics in which they are interested. Readers can search for books by title, author or by simply describing a book they would like to read. Currently, the database includes more than 135,000 fiction titles for all ages with subject and keyword access; more than 36,000 individual subject headings (fiction); more than 100,000 full-text reviews and descriptions from Booklist, Library Journal, School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly and others. Searches can be limited by reading level, using Lexile scores to match students with books geared to their reading ability. NoveList helps libraries provide the best service possible to fiction readers. NoveList is more than a database; it is a set of resources and services designed to help libraries create, develop and support the library’s services to its fiction readers. NoveList gives libraries access to the best subject indexing available for fiction, bibliographies and lists for the most popular authors and is a complete training program for library staff in the area of providing quality service for fiction readers.

NoveList® K-8 contains enhanced subject access for over 50,000 fiction titles aimed at the K-8 population in public library childrens' rooms. Full-text reviews from sources like School Library Journal and Booklist are available for many titles. The product also provides booktalks for selected young adult and children’s titles. NoveList K-8 has all of the searching features contained in NoveList and allows users to search by author, title, series, theme or topic. Users can find more books like the ones Brian Jacques writes or locate fantasy titles with teenage girls as heroes. The product also contains hundreds of genre and theme-based booklists as well as lists of award winning titles. NoveList K-8 also contains Lexile measures for many titles. This readability measure facilitates locating reading material that is geared to a user’s reading ability thereby ensuring reading experiences that challenge but do not frustrate emerging readers.

Designed to meet every student's science research needs, Science Reference Center contains full text for hundreds of science encyclopedias, reference books, periodicals and other sources. Topics covered include biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, history of science, life science, physics, science & society, science as inquiry, scientists, technology and wildlife. Science Reference Center also satisfies the demand for standards-based content by providing teachers and librarians with articles correlated to state and national curriculum standards.

Student Research Center is a search interface designed specifically for secondary school students according to their needs and search abilities. This interface provides students in secondary schools with the most appropriate research tools for easily obtaining the information that they seek from their EBSCO databases.

Through the Student Research Center, users can easily pre-determine which content sources (e.g., Magazines, Newspapers, Biographies, Country Reports, Film & Video where applicable) will be included with their search. They can also search their databases by topic heading, make use of an online dictionary and encyclopedia, explore the top searches of the day, and even limit their search according to appropriate Lexile reading levels.

new3.gif (1057 bytes) Points of View Reference Center is a full-text database designed for use in school libraries. Content of the database focuses on topical and controversial essays from proprietary content and selected licensed publications. Points of View Reference Center provides students and schools with a collection of full-text articles of various and contrasting opinions, accompanied by several hand-selected articles of similar types on the same topic. Teaching and learning templates are an important part of this tool that helps students grasp the concept of persuasive argument.
