OVERVIEW
Accessible Archives was founded in 1990 with
the goal of utilizing computer technology to make available vast quantities of archived
historical information, previously furnished only on microfilm.
In pursuit of this vision, primary 18th and 19th century newspaper
records have been selected which reflect a broad view of the times, and have been
assembled into databases with a strict attention to detail allowing access to specific
information with pinpoint accuracy. By using a full-text searchable format and combining
it with digital imaging software, for MS-DOS, MS-WINDOWS, and ONLINE environments, the
user is able to search and manipulate information in ways never before possible.
- The Accessible Archives online databases consist of more than 300
million full-text searchable words. Our database is almost "seven times the size of Britannica,"
growing at a rate of one to two million words added monthly. Over 20 million new words are
added each year. The following databases are included:
- The Pennsylvania Gazette (1728-1800)
- The American Civil War (eyewitness accounts from the Charleston
Mercury and the New York Herald)
- African American Newspapers
Freedom's Journal (1827-1830)
The Colored American (1837-1841)
Frederick Douglass' The North Star (1847-1851)
The Frederick Douglass Paper (1851-1859), completed through
1855
The National Era (1847-1860)
Provincial Freeman (1854-1857)
The Christian Recorder (1861-1902), completed through 1898;
1892 is not available
- Godey's Lady's Book (1830-1890)
- Pennsylvania Newspaper Record: Delaware County (1819-1870)
- Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: Chester County (1809-1870)
- American Counties to 1900
- Accessible Archives offers four databases in its Country
Histories series: New York, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

- This approach has been highly acclaimed and Accessible Archives'
titles are now in use by universities, secondary schools and research libraries throughout
the United States. Titles will continue to be added, covering important topics and time
periods to the CD-ROM and ON-LINE HISTORIC RESEARCH LIBRARY, designed for scholars and
students of all academic levels.
Be sure to check the Topical Study Guide on the Accessible Archives
site. It is a sampling of some of the thousands of subjects covered, a great resource for
students and teachers.
