PRODUCT OVERVIEW
SkillsTutor helps students master core
skills with research-based content, diagnostic testing and assessment,
prescriptive assignments and accountability reports for individual
students and classes. SkillsTutor can be deployed individually or
in small groups for grades, K-12, depending on the learning level and
specific needs of each student.
This Internet-based program will provide students with individualized
instruction, remediation and enrichment while aligning to the Ohio
Academic Content Standards and the Ohio Graduation Test.
Educators can draw on SkillsTutor’s 1,600 K-12 online lessons and
activities in areas such as reading, reading comprehension skills, reading
across the content (particularly social studies), reading vocabulary
building, writing, language arts, math, algebra, science, information
skills and workforce readiness.
The program is flexible, rich in content and easy to learn. It also
supports English language acquisition with a Spanish Audio option.
Web accessibility (ADA, Section 508 compliance): Houghton Mifflin is committed to providing
high-quality instructional material to all learners. In 1998, Congress amended the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to require that federally-procured information technology be
usable by people with disabilities. Section 508 of the amendments and subsequent documents
published by the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board define the
technical standards by which software can be judged as accessible.
SkillsTutor
complies with those standards and will be enhanced to further increase accessibility.
SkillsTutor uses Macromedia Flash as its primary content delivery technology. Flash
allows SkillsTutor to deliver high-quality
interactive software using minimal
bandwidth. Historically, however, Flash has not provided adequate support for the
variety of assistive devices available to learners
today. Macromedia, now owned by Adobe, has renewed their dedication to supporting
accessibility and has added increased assistive
device support. While the majority of SkillsTuto's content was created prior to that
enhancement, Houghton Mifflin has taken steps to assure that users of all abilities would have access
to it by providing keyboard interfaces and audio
support where applicable.
