PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Discovery Education Health Connection is an easy-to-use online health and prevention resource for K-12 educators that effectively addresses the needs of the whole student.

With more than 16 state standard–correlated curriculum programs covering nine key topic areas (Physical Activity, Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Violence, Safety, Nutrition, Tobacco, The Body, Growth and Development), Discovery Education Health Connection offers educators a comprehensive collection of videos, lessons developed around key literacy strategies, teacher’s guides and worksheets to provide students with a well-rounded mental, physical and emotional health education.

Each section comprises a research-based, teacher-reviewed K-12 curriculum. Some of the curricula — Here's Looking at You in the Drugs section; Get Real about Tobacco™, in the Tobacco section; and Get Real About Violence™ in the Violence section — have already been widely used throughout the country and have been converted to online programs for Discovery Education Health Connection. The other curricula have been created specifically for this Web site:

  • Body Works™ in the Body section
  • Me and Them™ in the Growth and Development section
  • Peace of Mind™ in the Mental Health section
  • Nutrition Smarts™ in the Nutrition section
  • Getting Physical™ in the Physical Activity section
  • All Safe™ in the Safety section

Content can be integrated into an existing curriculum, or a full-curriculum program may be followed.

Web accessibility (ADA, Section 508 compliance): Discovery Education will continue to make every reasonable effort to be in full compliance with Section 508 and other ADA requirements. The fact that Discovery Education is the leader among educational companies in providing closed captions on videos speaks to its commitment to provide reasonable access to educational media distributed in schools and other places of learning.

The unitedstreaming application is an Internet-based content-delivery system launched in January 2001. It employs new technology that is still in development. A review of Section 508 was conducted and it was determined that Discovery Education will work to make alternative access to information available within the limits of the technology available.

Examples of action taken to date include the closed-caption option for the hearing impaired and printable PDF files for the teacher’s guides, and student activities that include the option to increase the type size before printing.

The guidelines recommend that "alternative formats and methods" be available. (For example large print, audio and captioning). The video programs in unitedstreaming are also available in videotape formats with captioning. The video format offers an alternative method of delivering educational content.

Discovery Education provides instructional tools and resources. The users of these tools and resources also have a responsibility to comply with ADA regulations. Both the publisher and user of published tools and resources are required to comply by providing access where it is "readily achievable" (Section 255).

Section 508 requires that unitedstreaming “… be accessible except where it would cause an ‘undue burden.’” Currently, the build-out of unitedstreaming in order to make it fully accessible is not a practical solution and it would constitute an undue burden to attempt to do so. However, please be assured that Discovery Education will comply with the spirit of this law as well as the letter of the law.
