Migration on schedule: First buildings using new software

The first phase of INFOhio's migration to Sirsi Corporation's K-12 library automation software is complete, with the first 45 buildings running the new software. Most were MultiLIS schools, the first wave of more than 2,000 buildings that will participate in the migration over the next few years.

Five of Ohio's 23 DASites agreed to purchase necessary hardware and have technical staff trained to support the new software, LNOCA, MEC, NOACSC, SCOCA and SPARCC. Each DASite selected buildings to participate as prototypes, based on successful record cleanup and other factors. The prototypes' experiences are being evaluated to streamline the migration process for the remaining INFOhio buildings. The following table lists prototype districts; DASite links lead to online catalogs.

DASite District Buildings
LNOCA Western Reserve Academy 1
LNOCA South Euclid-Lyndhurst City Schools 9
LNOCA Hudson City Schools 6
MEC Columbus Public Schools 4
NOACSC Bath Local Schools 3
NOACSC Delphos City Schools 1
NOACSC Kalida Local Schools 2
NOACSC Ottoville Local Schools 2
SCOCA Fayetteville-Perry Local Schools 3
SCOCA Western Brown Local Schools 4
SPARCC Louisville City Schools 6
SPARCC Tuslaw Local Schools 4

To gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the first phase of migration, library staff involved were surveyed. Results are now being compiled to help guide the next phases of the migration project. Several respondents stressed the value of their time spent on data cleanup before migration. One librarian said, "I just want to stress how weeding the collection and doing an inventory was extremely beneficial." More information about Database Cleanup is located on the Sirsi Transition section of the INFOhio Web site.

Other respondents praised the assistance of their DASite providers in the migration process. "Be confident that INFOhio will provide training, lots of help and support, and the outstanding level of quality product and service that INFOhio is known for," said one respondent.

The second phase of the migration is now underway. First phase providers have received training to migrate additional districts within their DASites. In addition, all providers will assist INFOhio in fine tuning our procedures to produce item barcodes, spine labels, and INFOhio training materials for Sirsi K-12. DASites migrating in the third and subsequent phases will be announced in the next RECORD.

For more information about INFOhio's library automation migration project, contact your DASite provider or central@infohio.org. What You need to Know About Migration to Sirsi K-12 is a three-fold brochure produced by INFOhio that contains important information for school administrators, technology coordinators and library media staff. The PDF document is two pages.
