ODE announces Academic Content Standards for Technology

Ohio Department of Education Web site.Carla A. Southers, Assistant Director for Technology & School Libraries, Ohio Department of Education Office of Curriculum and Instruction, recently announced the State Board of Education approved Technology Academic Content Standards. The standards, which include benchmarks and indicators for grades K-12, join those already published for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

"This is the first ever set of Technology Standards in Ohio," Southers stated in her announcement. "They should be helpful to school librarians by including an Information Literacy standard." Resources to support the Technology Academic Content Standards are in development and include: a print publication (instructional commentary, program planning, vignettes, assessment strategies, resources, glossary, etc.), implementation materials (program planning, course of study development, etc.), electronic materials, and the Technology Model Curricula.

INFOhio Executive Director Theresa M. Fredericka praised Southers and her team that developed the Technology Academic Content Standards. "INFOhio appreciates the work of the many individuals who have contributed to this major accomplishment! We look forward to working closely with Carla and ODE as Technology and Information Literacy receive the emphasis in K-12 instruction they deserve," Fredericka stated.

Gayle Geitgey, Library Media/Technology Coordinator for Urbana City Schools and a member of the advisory committee, also praised the new standards. "The fact that there is an Information Literacy component in these standards is just fantastic and that we got to actually be the ones writing the benchmarks and indicators is really a tribute to ODE and Carla," Geitgey said.

Southers is the keynote speaker at the next INFOhio State Users Group meeting on January 28, 2004. Her remarks will include an update on the Technology Academic Content Standards and will explain the next steps in the development and implementation process.
