CRC support materials revised

INFOhio Curriculum Resource CatalogSeveral changes to Curriulum Resource Catalog Task Force (formerly Union Catalog Task Force) documents have been published on the INFOhio Web site. These documents support the efforts of all K-12 library staff who work with MARC records. While some documents target MultiLIS and Sirsi K-12 users, most assist all catalogers and those purchasing or downloading MARC records. Suggestions regarding INFOhio's K-12 Curriculum Resource Catalog and related Web documents and links can be e-mailed to the task force co-chairs.

To see the new documents, and those that have not changed, visit About INFOhio's Curriculum Resource Catalog..., the starting point for CRCTF materials. The page has three sections:

Cataloging Services for All Libraries - This section provides directions for Exporting MARC Records from INFOhio's Union Catalog, both for MultiLIS users and those who have standalone systems. While the Union Catalog has been renamed to assist non-librarian users, copy cataloging functionality has not been changed. Copying/Loading MARC Records from the Library of Congress was revised October 27, 2003, and the four-page document is available in two formats, MS Word and PDF. Also in this section is information about the OCLC CatExpress service, a low-cost program that allows K-12 librarians to download records from OCLC WorldCat.

Cataloging Support - This section has three components:

  • Several new or revised documents are part of the INFOhio Cataloging Resources component.
-- Aligning Resources to Ohio Academic Content Standards was published in October to assist librarians editing or creating MARC records for materials aligned to the Standards. The MARC tag, its indicators, and subfields can be copied/pasted into a MARC record.
-- Three of the Guidelines documents have seen recent changes:
Guidelines for Matching MARC Records was revised significantly on November 28, 2003, and the four-page document is available in two formats, MS Word and PDF.
Guidelines for Evaluating MARC Records was revised by addition of two tags on November 28, 2003, and the three-page document is available in two formats, MS Word and PDF.

Guidelines for Enhancing MARC Records was revised, specifically the 521 and 658 tags,  October 27, 2003, and  the six-page document is available in two formats, MS Word and PDF.
-- INFOhio's Cataloging Reference Archive is a new section, a blending of Cataloging FAQs and Tags and Tips into an easier to use resource for school library staff who edit, enhance, and create MARC records. The Archive has four sections of brief notes and longer explanations to help catalogers keep current: MARC specific topics, information about specific MARC tags, MultiLIS specific topics, and subject heading updates. The Archive contents page includes a form to submit cataloging questions to the Task Force.
-- For librarians faced with original cataloging, the CRCTF is creating a series of MARC templates for various materials types. The first four  instructions are posted in the INFOhio Cataloging Resources components: Book, Book on Cassette, Equipment, and Videocassette.
