Changes to OCLC Record Request Service A 7.5% reduction in operating
expenses forecast for the 2003-2004 school year and the Governing Advisory Board's
decision to prepare for new priorities will result in the elimination of the position of
INFOhio Cataloger and Bibliographic Control Specialist, announced Theresa M. Fredericka,
INFOhio Executive Director. We all appreciate the service Kathy Martin has provided
INFOhio users these past six years. She has contributed greatly to the growth and
stability of the INFOhio Union Catalog during this time period. I know you will join me in
wishing Kathy the best with her new endeavors, Fredericka stated. More information about the elimination of INFOhios Record Request Service can be found on the INFOhio Web site. Those who have outstanding OCLC record requests are urged to read the FAQs. 1) Continue to order records from materials vendors. Many publishers and jobbers offer high-quality records that are easily loaded with INFOhio batch load procedures. Use the INFOhio's Vendor MARC Records Specification form to assure vendors comply with your needs. [MS Word OR PDF 1 pg.] 2) Search the INFOhio Union Catalog for matching records. Each week an extraction program collects new and enhanced records from each DASites database, making the Union Catalog that much more complete. In addition, the Area Media Centers grant to add their holdings to the Union Catalog results in many new and improved non-print records. Check the Union Catalog when school resumes for needed records, and you may find those you need. 3) Search the Library of Congress database for matching records. Ohio librarians are finding many needed records at LC. INFOhio provides instructions for downloading LC records for both MultiLIS and non-MultiLIS users. 4) Subscribe to CatExpress. Using CatExpress, library staff can search WorldCat and
download OCLC records themselves for only $1 per record. More than 100 Ohio K-12 schools
were CatExpress subscribers this school year. And many DASites have successfully pooled
small orders together to provide access to those districts that do not need the required
minimum of 100 records. INFOhio encourages school libraries to subscribe to CatExpress. Specific ordering and
pricing information is available on the INFOhio Web site. CatExpress records are
loaded daily in the Union Catalog. |
