Searching / Copying MARC Records from

the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is another source of free MARC records. The Library of Congress often catalogs materials from galley proofs, and therefore a bibliographic record may exist even before a title is published. This cataloging information provided by the publisher is known as Cataloging in Publication (CIP). Because the cataloging was done prior to publication, some important information may vary or may be missing (e.g., page numbers, illustrations, size) from the item in hand (e.g., publication). Such records require updating, after loading into your system.

Library of Congress records are searched and copied using a Web browser such as Netscape or Explorer. You must set up your personal computer to receive the exported records, and then you must FTP the records to the DASite computer where they will be loaded.
