Announcements and Updates

INFOhio to offer OCLC WorldCat to automated schools
Message from INFOhio
May 10, 2007

Dear Colleagues,

INFOhio will join with OHIONET/OCLC and Ohio's Information Technology Centers (ITCs) that support INFOhio in providing a new cataloging service to replace CatExpress and allow schools automated with INFOhio to request an unlimited number of bibliographic records for the 2007-2008 school year.

This new service will allow library media staff to connect to the OCLC WorldCat database via SirsiDynix SmartPort and capture records directly into their library catalogs. Our goal with OHIONET is to have the new cataloging services available no later than July 15, 2007. [Read more about OCLC WorldCat on INFOhio's Preview 2007 product summary.]

Current CatExpress subscriptions will be valid through June 29, 2007. Please deplete your remaining balance by then, as all unused records will be lost.

All current CatExpress user authorizations and building profiles will be terminated on June 30, 2007, to allow for setup and activation of the new service. Accessing the OCLC WoldCat database via SmartPort will not require a special username and password. More details on using this new service will be sent prior to or with the announcement of the new service being ready to use.

Please note that the Expanded Cataloging Service and WorldCat subscription which is being purchased by INFOhio and the ITCs is for INFOhio-automated libraries only. Please contact your ITC regarding the cost of this new service for next year.

Libraries not automated with INFOhio desiring a CatExpress subscription for next year will be directed to OHIONET and will deal directly with the vendor. INFOhio will no longer be involved in CatExpress subscriptions for these schools.

INFOhio will consider next school year as an evaluation year for the service to determine need and desire for its continuation, while working with the schools and ITCs to determine future funding and costs. Your comments will be welcome.

Sincerely,
Theresa M. Fredericka
